MOGADISHU (SomaliUpdate Online) — Somali Government today announced it will protect local employment and prevent foreigners taking over the already limited job opportunities available, Somaliupdate reports.
The government’s announcement comes as Somali workers celebrate the International World Labor Day today in Mogadishu and major towns across the county.
Minister of Labour and Social Services Salah Ahmed Jama noted the importance of creating jobs for the youth to eradicate illegal immigration of Somali youth to Europe and the recruitment of the terror groups.
He said his ministry is working tirelessly in bringing policies serving for the interest of the Somali labourers.
"We will not allow any foreigner to have a job that any Somali person can handle” the Minister added.
The minister’s remarks followed previous complaints about foreign unskilled employees contracted to work in various sectors across the country.
During the event in Mogadishu, officials from Somali trade unions marked the day with speeches about the hardships and challenges faced by Somali workers.
Trade unionists also expressed concern about the lack of decent work policy in Somalia.

Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire who later addressed the workers event pledged the government’s support to both public and private sector workers.
"The Government is committed to pay wages and salaries regularly, as we also ask workers’ hand in ensuring their rights” Prime Minister Khaire reiterated.
