LONDON (Somali Update Online) — Leaders from governments in East and Horn of Africa started to gather in London, United Kingdom on Wednesday to participate the third London Conference on Somalia on Thursday May 11th, Somaliupdate reports.
Presidents from Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta, Uganda Yoweri Museveni and Djibouti Ismail Omar Guelleh, as well Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn; all part of the African Union Mission troops in Somalia (AMISOM) troop-contributing countries, were all on their way to the conference venue in London on Wednesday.
Egypt’s Prime Minister Sherif Ismail has reportedly traveled to UK to attend the conference.
Several other world leaders and foreign ministers from bigger countries, representatives from European Union, Arab League, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the African Union will involve in the conference.
The two-day UK-hosted Somalia Conference will focus on shaping the international support on Somalia, while the conference is also testing the readiness of the war-torn horn of African nation's army to stand to take over its security after the withdrawal of the more than 22,000 African Union forces currently backing the federal government in Mogadishu.
The conference at the historical Lancaster House in London will be co-hosted by the UK Prime Minister Theresa May, the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and the United Nations will also address the severe humanitarian crisis in the country as more than five million Somalis risking of famine this year.
UK hosted two previous gatherings on Somalia in 2012 and 2013.
Earlier Somalia’s Information Minister Abdirahman Omar Osman lamented that this time it appears that Somalia and UK are both well prepared so that the conference will produce its intended objectives and outcomes.
"The London Conference comes at the right time, when new leaders have full mandate and support of the majority of the population. So the momentum is there to build a new relationship between the government and public.” The minister said in an opinion- editorial article.
Anyhow, it is still too early to predict how the outcome of the conference in the UK capital will translate into tangible impact on the Somali soil.
