NAIROBI (Somali Update Online) — A driver of a land cruiser died on Wednesday and another person injured after the car they were traveling hit a landmine between Elwak and Kotulo, security official said.
The land cruiser working for a contractor company in Mandera, was heading to Kotulo town from Elwak, on the porous border between the two countries, when the blast hit it.
Kenya’s Mandera County Commissioner Fred Shisia said the landmine was suspected to be planted by the militant group of Al-Shabab who in the past carried deadly attacks in the area.
"We are trying to clear the area now.” He told reporters.
Mr. Shisia said security forces reached the area and are currently assessing if the road between the two towns is safe for civilian travelers.
On Wednesday public buses were stopped in Elwak as the drivers were told to postpone their journey until the road is cleared of possible explosives.
The blast came as the Al-Shabab militia on Tuesday night attacked Omar Jillo village, near Mandera killing a local chief and kidnapped two police officers.
Currently Mandera, a key Somalia-Kenya border town is under dusk to dawn curfew due to past terror attacks that affected the town.
