WFP cargo plane crashes near Garbaharey Airstrip on Saturday June 3, 2017.
MOGADISHU (Somali Update Online) — A World Food Programme (WFP) cargo plane transporting aid food for drought-hit Somalis in Garbaharey town in Southern Somalia region of Gedo, has crashed near the town's main airstrip on Saturday, local officials said.
The cargo flight from Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport was about to land at the airport around midday today before it crashed.
Initial reports two crew onboard were unhurt.
Garbaharey Airstrip management official Hussein Mohamed said the reason of the plane crash was yet unknown.
Rsidents in the town said they have seen huge smoke from the crash site near a residential houses.
Security forces cordoned off the crash site, as the regional authorities said they were beginning an investigation into the crash cause.
There were no immediate comment from WFP Somalia.
