MOGADISHU (Somali Update Online) — A well-known local traditional elder reported missing after armed men with Somalia government forces uniform raided his home in Wanla-weyn town, about 90KM west of Somalia capital Mogadishu.
According to a family member who sought anonymity due to safety concerns, elder Sidow Ahmed Shimbir has been abducted by three gunmen who raided his home around midnight on Friday night.
The gunmen took the elder to unidentified location and his whereabouts not known.
The family member said elder Shimbir has recently returned from a trip to Mogadishu.  He has in the past involved peace gatherings in his home town where local elders and government officials urged peace and reconciliation among the community in Lower Shabelle, a region described as Somalia's bread basket and ravaged by recurrent inter-clan clashes over resources and militant activities.
According to Major Hussein Sahal of Wanla-weyn District Police Station, the police received reports of the missing elder from the family and the police were not able to trace the elder as of Saturday morning.
The police officer said that the police were dealing the matter seriously as they could not confirm if the abductors were government forces or members of the militant group Al-Shabab who in the past carried assassinations against elders perceived to be backing the government.
In the past four months, more than ten elders involved in the latest new Parliament selection and activists assassinated in Mogadishu and other towns in the southern regions.
