Somalia faces internet outage since Monday following submarine internet cable disruption.
MOGADISHU (Somali Update Online) — Several million users in southern Somalia towns are experiencing internet outage since Monday following submarine internet cable disruption which continues until today on Wednesday. According to senior director of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications Ahmed Haji Ali, the outage started shortly on Monday after suspected commercial ship hit the fibre optic internet cable in the Indian Ocean which many Internet Service Providers (ISP) companies in the country rely on resulting in internet and fixed voice service providers to go down.
The effects of the outage immediately felt as it came amid Eid and the National Independence Day celebrations which started on Sunday.
Social media users have been locked out of the service rushing to direct phone connections to reach relatives family members abroad.
The outage also affected money transactions and other businesses as thousands of dollars is estimated to have been lost each day.
The ministry officials now say, the outage will remain until next week when the service expected to restore as technical teams fixing the cut cables yet to arrive from overseas.
