MOGADISHU (Somali Update Online) — Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo became the first to congratulate Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta on his re-election victory on Friday following hotly contested election on Tuesday.
Mr. Kenyatta, the son of Kenya's first president was declared winner later on Friday beating his rival Raila Odinga, the main opposition leader.
The President got 8,203,290 votes, while rival Raila Odinga got 6,762,224, the electoral commission chair Wafula Chebukati said on Friday.
"President Kenyatta is not only a close friend and brother but also a development conscious and diligent leader." said President Farmajo in a statement released to newsrooms shortly after Kenyatta's victory was announced.
President Farmajo noted that he was confident that the re-election of President Kenyatta would foster further cooperation on bilateral and diplomatic relations between Somalia and Kenya.
"President Kenyatta and I share a common vision of peace, stability and economic growth for our two countries and the region as a whole"
Somalia has had strong economic and diplomatic ties with Kenya, which were further strengthened after President Farmajo made his maiden state visit to Nairobi in March this year following his election in February this year.
"We remain committed to promote peace, open trade and economic cooperation with Kenya." concluded Somali President.
