MOGADISHU (Somali Update Online) — Somali forces backed by the African Union Mission troops and U.S Special Forces took control of Barire, about 60 Km northwest of Mogadishu following days of fierce gunfight, force spokesman said.
"The operation is on-going. We have liberated Barire today [Saturday] from the terrorists." Abdullahi Iman Ainte, Somalia's Military Spokesman said.
"Lower Shabelle region is very important to the security and the economy so we can not allow terrorist to hide in." he added.
Barire is part of Lower Shabelle region, which many swathes of it is still under militant control. In May, a U.S Special Forces soldier was killed during a covert operation on Al-Shabaab base in the area.
The security forces carried landmine clearing operation as roadside bomb hit a passenger bus on Friday killing five civilians escaping the armed conflict in the area.
The spokesman said, while AMISOM supported the land forces, the U.S Special Forces played critical role in the intelligence and air surveilance during the operation that saw Barire's take over on Saturday.
Regional officials confirmed the incident on Friday which targeted a minibus carrying families escaping toward Mogadishu.
"Five civilians among them women died after their bus run over a landmine. We suspect it was an Al-Shabaab landmine." Mohamed Salad, a deputy commissioner of Lower Shabelle said.
