    Somalia: Ministers Banned from Using Social Media, Press without Permission from Office of the PM

    MOGADISHU (Somali Update Online) — Somalia Cabinet of the Ministers were told not to engage with the media and social media without first seeking permission from the Office of the Prime Minister, a memo sent to the ministers on Saturday said.

MOGADISHU (Somali Update Online) — Somalia Cabinet of the Ministers were told not to engage with the media and social media without first seeking permission from the Office of the Prime Minister, a memo sent to the ministers on Saturday said.
The memo dated on 26th of August, 2017 was signed by the Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Guled Mohamed.
"All the ministers in which this letter is addressed to are informed before writing anything on their Social Media platforms or engaging with the press, they need to acquire permission from the Office of the Prime Minister." the letter said.
It also mentioned that contents and the subject of discussion - if it is related to the government affairs - be approved for the ministers before they talk to the media.
"It's prohibited use of social media for sensitive matters." the letter noted.
The instructions are the first of their kind in history. It comes following heavy public outcry after government ministers and officials at the Presidential released contradictory statements on Friday after 10 people were killed during a raid by Somali and US. Special Forces near Bariire, in Lower Shabelle region.
The contradictory statement which were posted on several social media platforms maintained by the ministers of Information, Defense and the Presidential were all retracted followed by at least one corrected version about the Friday incident.
The governmnt has since appoibted a special committee to investigate the death of the 10 people, three of them children.
