MOGADISHU (Somali Update Online) — Somali journalists mourned for the death of TV reporter Abdullahi Osman Moallim who succumbed to critical injuries following Al-Shabaab suicide bombing in Beledweyne, in Hiiraan region on Sunday.
Two other journalists who were also wounded in the blast are on hospital.
The journalist who was working for Jubbaland TV and Radio Codka Hiiraan sustained life threatening wounds after an Al-Shabaab suicide bomber blew up himself in a restaurant in Beledweyne where members of the press were waiting for a planned press briefing by the Hiiraan governor. He was airlifted to Mogadishu on Monday to receive urgent medical attention. Doctors and family members said he died in the Rejeb Dayib Erdogan hospital early on Wednesday.
"We are in shock as the doctors informed us that the journalist passed away due to serious injuries on his head. We have buried this afternoon." Abdi Moallim, a family member said. "He had head injuries as shrapnel from blast penetrated part of his head."
Abdullahi Osman Moalllim is the second journalist killed in Somalia this year. The country is still the most dangerous place for journalists to work. More than 60 journalists were murdered in Somalia since 1991, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) documentation.
"The death of the journalist Abdullahi Osman Moalim is heart breaking."Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu of the National Union of Somali Journalists said.
In a statement, The United States Mission to Somalia condemned the Beledweyne Al-Shabaab attack on Sunday and the group's indiscriminate attacks on the Somali people.
"We salute and encourage Somali journalists to continue their work despite the daily struggles and risks, in defense of the inalienable right of freedom of expression on behalf of the Somali people.” the U.S Statement added.
