The elder was accosted by two assailants who shot him dead at close range near his house in the busy Bakaro market in Mogadishu.
MOGADISHU (Somali Update Online) —Suspected al-Shabaab gunmen have shot and killed a prominent elder in the capital, Mogadishu, Sunday night the latest in a string of assassinations against the elders who involved in the country's electoral delegate who selected the current lawmakers in 2016-2017 elections.
The gunned down elder, Hassan Ja'iir was among the electoral delegates who participated the selection parliamentarians in Jowhar town.
According to witnesses, the elder was accosted by two assailants who shot him dead at close range near his house in the busy Bakaro market in Mogadishu before they managed to escape from the crime scene.
Al-Shabaab has claimed the responsibility for the assassination of the elder in a statement posted on pro-al-Shabaab website.
The al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group has killed dozens of elders and electoral delegates who participated in Somalia's two indirect elections that took place in 2012 and 2016.
Late last year, the group vowed to assassinate anybody who involved in the recent elections.
