BMW Bets Its 3 Series on the $61,500 Electric i3
BMW priced the i3 50 xDrive at $61,500 with 446 to 468 miles of estimated range, while a $49,900 gasoline 330 still sits beside it.
BMW priced the i3 50 xDrive, its first electric 3 Series, from $61,500 with 446 to 468 miles of estimated range. Munich started building the car in August 2026, and US deliveries are due in the first quarter of 2027.
The sedan carries two recycled names. Neue Klasse once saved BMW with a mid-size four-door. i3 once meant a carbon-fiber city car the company stopped making in 2022. The gasoline 3 Series is not retiring. It is moving to Dingolfing.
The Electric 3 Series BMW Waited Half a Century to Build
The 2027 i3 50 xDrive sits on BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive layout, an 800-volt system shared with the iX3, the first Neue Klasse model. Two motors send a combined 463 hp and 476 lb-ft through all four wheels. A 322 hp electrically excited motor drives the rear axle. A 165 hp induction motor sits up front. BMW quotes 4.5 seconds to 60 mph. In Europe the same car is listed at 345 kW and 4.7 seconds to 100 km/h, with a 200 km/h cap.
The pack is rated at 108.7 kWh net. Cylindrical cells sit in a structural housing that also forms the floor, a pack-to-open-body design BMW says stiffens the shell and trims height. The electric car rides on a 114.1-inch wheelbase, 1.5 inches longer than the gasoline G50 3 Series, and is 73.4 inches wide.
THE I3 50 XDRIVE AT A GLANCE
- US price: $61,500 plus $1,350 destination, or $62,850 at the curb before tax.
- US range: 446 to 468 miles, a BMW estimate from its own tests using EPA methods, not a finished agency label.
- Peak charge: 400 kW DC, 10 to 80 percent in 21 minutes, with 191 to 208 miles added in 10 minutes on that same US estimate.
- Europe range: 729 to 912 km on the WLTP cycle, or up to 567 miles, a different test from the US figures.
Europe also gets a cheaper dual-motor i3 40 xDrive from €59,900, with 275 kW, a 300 kW charge peak and up to 710 km WLTP. The 50 xDrive starts at €65,900 there. A First Edition, on sale from mid-June 2026 ahead of the autumn 2026 launch, was listed from €75,340. The United States opens with the 50 xDrive only.
On a 400 kW post the 800-volt pack can add 423 km of WLTP range in 10 minutes. The car can feed a home or a load through vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-load ports. AC charging is 11 kW as standard and 22 kW as an option.
A Name That Once Meant a Carbon-Fiber City Car
BMW showed the first Neue Klasse, the 1500, at the 1961 Frankfurt motor show after a 1959 scare in which Daimler-Benz nearly absorbed the firm. Herbert Quandt kept the company independent. Production of that mid-size sedan family ran from February 1962 to January 1972, and BMW’s history pages put output at 339,814 cars. Between 1960 and 1970, sales of BMW cars tripled and vehicle revenue rose more than sevenfold. A two-door offshoot in 1966 led to the 1602 and 2002, then to the first 3 Series in 1975.
The other name on this car is newer and stranger. The first i3 was a tall city hatch with a carbon-fiber passenger cell on an aluminum skateboard, built in Leipzig from 2013. The original i3 arrived in the US in 2014 at $41,350. It weighed 2,635 pounds, made 174 hp, and later used a 42.2 kWh pack good for 153 miles on the EPA cycle. US volume was 16,052 in 2015 and peaked at 39,501 in 2019. Assembly ended in July 2022.
That car was a separate i-brand experiment. This i3 is the volume sedan. Same badge, different job.
HOW THE NAMES GOT HERE
- December 1959: Shareholders block a Daimler-Benz takeover; the Quandt family backs a new mid-size car.
- 1961: BMW unveils the 1500 at Frankfurt, the first Neue Klasse sedan.
- 1975: The first 3 Series starts production at Plant Munich.
- 2013: The carbon-fiber i3 city car enters production in Leipzig.
- July 2022: Original i3 production ends after nine years.
- August 6, 2026: Series production of the electric i3 50 xDrive begins in Munich.
Marc Thiesbürger, press spokesman for BMW Group Classic, has described the 1960s cars as a “new class” the company believed was unique. The 2026 reuse of the phrase is a marketing choice with a factory behind it, not a rerun of a near-death year.
Munich Has Built 3 Series Cars Since 1975
Plant Munich has built more than nine million 3 Series cars since 1975. The electric i3 now takes that line. BMW Group spent four years rebuilding the plant while it still turned out up to 1,000 vehicles a day. A new body shop and assembly hall cover about a third of the site. From 2027 the home plant will build only fully electric cars.
Sixth-generation high-voltage batteries come from the new Irlbach-Straßkirchen plant in Lower Bavaria, about 90 minutes from Munich, with shipments due from October 2026. Drive units come from Steyr in Austria. BMW Group says it is putting around €2 billion into this generation of 3 Series manufacturing in Germany, split near evenly between the Munich and Dingolfing vehicle plants and the battery factory. A March 2026 plant briefing put the Munich rebuild itself at around €650 million.
The models of the Neue Klasse are proving to be very popular. The second Neue Klasse model, the BMW i3, is already seeing strong demand since orders opened ahead of schedule.
Jochen Goller, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, BMW Group
Peter Weber, plant director in Munich, said the i3 launch cuts manufacturing costs at the site by another 10 percent. Raymond Wittmann, the board member for production, said the 3 Series embodies BMW more than almost any other model, and that Plant Munich represents the brand more than almost any other factory. BMW Group also notes that 15 million of about 18 million 3 Series cars were built in Germany.
What $61,500 Buys Against a Tesla Model 3
The US i3 50 xDrive undercuts a loaded German electric rival on list price and posts a range estimate well above Tesla’s current Model 3 peak. It does not undercut Tesla on the way in. Tesla lists the Model 3 from $29,990, with up to 363 miles of EPA range on the long-range rear-drive car and 346 miles on the long-range all-wheel-drive version.
US RANGE, CHARGE AND PRICE
| Measure | BMW i3 50 xDrive | Tesla Model 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Starting US price | $61,500 plus $1,350 destination | From $29,990 |
| Range | 446 to 468 miles (BMW EPA-method estimate) | Up to 363 miles EPA (RWD); 346 miles EPA (AWD Long Range) |
| 0-60 mph | 4.5 seconds | 4.9 seconds (RWD Long Range); 4.2 seconds (AWD Long Range) |
| Electrical system | 800 V, 400 kW DC peak | Tesla Supercharger network; up to 195 miles added in 15 minutes |
| Drive | Dual-motor all-wheel drive | Rear-drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive |
On paper the BMW estimate is 105 miles longer than Tesla’s 363-mile EPA peak. The catch in the comparison is certification: Tesla’s numbers are EPA ratings, and BMW’s 446 to 468 miles are still the company’s own readings. If those numbers shrink in a formal label, the gap shrinks with them.
The argument around the car is already about mass and money, not the sharknose. Tesla’s cheaper floor and driver-assist stack remain the easy attack. BMW’s reply is the 800-volt peak, a 108.7 kWh net pack, a head-up driver display and bidirectional charging. The larger pack that funds the range claim also invites the charge that this 3 Series is a heavier, thirstier machine than a Model 3. That objection will sit until independent highway tests land, which they cannot do in the United States before 2027 stock arrives.
Heart of Joy Drops the Instrument Cluster
The cabin throws out a conventional cluster. BMW Panoramic iDrive throws speed and nav across the base of the windshield. A 17.9-inch free-cut central screen angles toward the driver. The wheel uses low-profile “shy-tech” switches. Flush handles and hidden window seals keep the skin clean. The nose is a single panel that folds the kidney grille, twin horizontal LEDs and the driver-aid sensors into one face.
BMW’s official launch post put that face on the timeline in March 2026 with a short line, “The heartbeat of a new era.”

Under the floor, control is split across four superbrains for the Neue Klasse. BMW says the set has more than 20 times the computing power of the last electronic generation, and that a zonal harness is 30 percent lighter and uses 600 metres less cable.
THE FOUR COMPUTERS IN THE I3
- Heart of Joy: Drive, brakes, some steering tasks, charging and recuperation, BMW’s dynamics computer.
- Automated driving: A separate unit for driver aids and parking.
- Infotainment: The panoramic display, the 17.9-inch screen and connected services.
- Basic functions: Access, climate and comfort loads.
BMW says Heart of Joy is ten times faster than previous systems. The company argues that speed cuts the number of stability-control nips in a corner and makes the car repeat a line. That is a brochure claim until magazines put instruments on the car. It is also the reason BMW is willing to delete a dial cluster that 3 Series owners have stared at since 1975.
The Gasoline Twin Leaves for Dingolfing
BMW still calls the strategy “technology-open.” Combustion and plug-in hybrid 3 Series cars, coded G50, start production at Plant Dingolfing in November 2026. In Germany a 318 is listed from €49,900 (115 kW), a 320 from €54,900 (155 kW), and the M350 xDrive six-cylinder from €80,900 (326 kW, 443 hp). Those gasoline cars are cheaper at the door than the electric flagship, and they keep a six-cylinder in the family. An i3 M60 xDrive is slated for 2027, with no published power or range yet.
So the electric 3 Series does not replace the 3 Series. It splits the name across two Bavarian plants, two drivetrains and two waiting rooms. European buyers can take cars from the autumn 2026 launch. American buyers wait until the first quarter of 2027, then pay $61,500 before destination for a dual-motor sedan whose 446 to 468 mile estimate is still BMW’s own homework.
From 2027, the factory that has made 3 Series cars for 51 years will not build another gasoline one. The badge that once sat on a 2,635-pound city hatch now sits on the company’s core sedan, with a range claim Tesla has not posted and a price Tesla still undercuts. That is the wager Munich is running down the line.
