EA Closes BioWare and Cancels the Next Mass Effect

EA closed BioWare 78 days after its $55 billion sale and killed a six-year Mass Effect sequel that was still in early development.

Electronic Arts closed BioWare on October 21, 2026 and canceled the next Mass Effect game in early development. The Edmonton studio that made Mass Effect and Dragon Age is gone, with about 50 jobs there, inside a wider cut of about 400 roles.

The cut landed 78 days after EA’s $55 billion sale closed. Chief studios officer Cam Weber and chief operating officer David Tinson told staff the next Mass Effect was still a small team in early development, and that they would not move it forward.

EA’s Memo Ends BioWare in One Paragraph

The public version of that staff note, posted as Building EA’s Next Chapter, does not bury the studio in a footnote. After a section on shooters and a promise to put full weight behind Marvel’s Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game, Weber and Tinson reach the RPG studio in four sentences.

As we focus on these larger opportunities, we’ve had a small team at BioWare working on early-development for Mass Effect. We’ve made the decision not to move forward with this development, which means we’re closing the studio and our Edmonton workspace. BioWare is a legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre, and we do not take this decision lightly.

Cam Weber and David Tinson, staff memo, EA newsroom

People familiar with the plan said EA is cutting about 400 jobs, about 3 percent of its staff, including about 50 at BioWare. The memo itself never prints those headcounts. It does print the consequence: closing the studio and our Edmonton workspace, and ending the Mass Effect work that was still in early development.

Weber and Tinson wrote that EA is the number one publisher in Western HD gaming, then listed three priorities: deepen the core, expand reach, and transform the business. Under deepen the core they said saying no to some things they are passionate about is how the biggest remaining bets get enough people and money. BioWare is the no.

Seventy-Eight Days After the $55 Billion Close

On August 4, 2026, EA completed its acquisition by PIF, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners. The consortium’s agreement had been announced on September 29, 2025. Stockholders were paid $210 in cash a share. EA’s common stock stopped trading and was set to leave NASDAQ.

Chairman and chief executive Andrew Wilson said the company was entering the next chapter from a position of strength and would invest boldly with partners who shared that aim. PIF deputy governor Turqi Alnowaiser, a minority investor in EA for more than five years, pointed at sports and gaming as sectors PIF wants. Silver Lake’s Egon Durban talked about putting money into growth, including what AI can do to game development. Affinity Partners chief executive Jared Kushner said EA’s stories and communities were part of everyday life for hundreds of millions of people.

The shutdown memo never names those buyers. It says that over the past several months EA took a hard look at the business. That window sits across the close of the sale. In fiscal year 2026, EA posted GAAP net revenue of about $7.5 billion. The games the memo protects are the ones that already feed that figure: FC, Battlefield, Apex Legends, and the sports slate around them.

A single-player Mass Effect sequel that was still in early development, after nearly six years of teasers, did not make that list.

Veilguard Already Told EA the Math

BioWare’s last shipped game was Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which launched on October 31, 2024. EA later said the game engaged about 1.5 million players in the quarter, down nearly 50 percent from the company’s expectations. Wilson said it did not resonate with a broad enough audience in a highly competitive market. Chief financial officer Stuart Canfield put the miss on the competitive dynamics of the single-player RPG market.

THE VEILGUARD MISS

  • Launch date: Dragon Age: The Veilguard shipped on October 31, 2024, the first new Dragon Age in a decade.
  • Players reached: EA said it engaged about 1.5 million players in the quarter that followed.
  • Internal target: That figure was down nearly 50 percent from what EA had expected.
  • Studio after: BioWare was then cut and some staff were moved to other EA teams, leaving a small Mass Effect group.

Two years before those cuts, BioWare had been more than 200 people while Veilguard was in heavy production. After the miss, the studio fell under 100, then to the about 50 who were still there when the lights went out. The next Mass Effect did not fail in review. It never got far enough to be reviewed.

Anthem, BioWare’s 2019 live-service shooter, had already taken the studio off the path that made its name. The game failed to hold a loyal online crowd, and BioWare itself listed Anthem in its farewell beside Baldur’s Gate and Mass Effect. Veilguard then spent years in a live-service plan that EA later reversed, only to ship a single-player game that still missed the bookings EA had built into its year.

Six Years of Teasers, Still Early Development

On November 7, 2020, BioWare used N7 Day to say a veteran team was already envisioning the next chapter of Mass Effect, in early stages, with nothing more to share. A teaser at The Game Awards that December showed Liara T’Soni with a fragment of N7 armor. Fans spent the next years reading every still, including later art that hinted at Krogan conflict, as a promise that Commander Shepard’s galaxy still had a sequel coming.

On November 7, 2025, executive producer Mike Gamble wrote that rumors were wrong. “The next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe,” he said. The team, he added, was heads-down and focused exclusively on Mass Effect, with universe to cover, features to build, and romances to figure out. He also said BioWare was working with Amazon on a show set after the original trilogy, not a retread of Shepard’s story.

Eleven months later, EA’s own memo called that same project early development and a small team. The gap between Gamble’s exclusive-focus blog and Weber and Tinson’s kill note is the record of a studio that had already been emptied out, then asked to start again.

THE ROAD TO THE LAST MEMO

  1. 1995: BioWare is founded in Edmonton.
  2. 2007: Electronic Arts buys the studio, months before the first Mass Effect ships.
  3. November 7, 2020: BioWare says a veteran team is envisioning the next Mass Effect chapter.
  4. October 31, 2024: Dragon Age: The Veilguard launches, then misses EA’s player target.
  5. November 7, 2025: Mike Gamble says the studio is working only on Mass Effect.
  6. August 4, 2026: EA’s $55 billion sale closes.
  7. October 21, 2026: EA ends the Mass Effect project and closes BioWare.

N7 Day on November 7, 2026 will arrive with no studio left to post a blog. EA did not name another team to inherit the build.

What EA Chose to Keep Instead

The same memo that kills BioWare is a map of what private EA still wants to fund. Battlefield 6 is called a great success. Apex Legends gets more modes and a larger universe over the next few years. Respawn and DICE are being brought together on a future shooter. Iron Man and the next Jedi game stay on the calendar. EA Sports keeps FC and adds a social open-world football project called Project Gridiron, plus Fight Night in pre-production.

Lifestyle is thinner. The Sims team is told to put its weight on Project Evergreen and to pause Project Lotus. The skate. team is being made smaller so it can chase a clearer live roadmap. Ripple Effect, Maxis, and Full Circle are among the groups hit by the wider cuts. BioWare is the only studio the memo closes outright.

WHAT THE OCTOBER 21 MEMO FUNDS AND CUTS

Project Decision Team
Next Mass Effect Canceled; studio closed BioWare, Edmonton
Marvel’s Iron Man Continuing EA Motive
Next Star Wars Jedi Continuing Respawn
Battlefield and Apex Legends Continuing, more investment DICE and Respawn
Project Lotus (The Sims) Paused Maxis
Project Evergreen (The Sims) Priority continues Maxis
skate. Continues with a smaller team Full Circle
Project Gridiron and Fight Night In development / pre-production EA Sports

That slate is live service, licensed action, and annual sports. A six-year role-playing sequel with no ship date does not sit on it. The Mass Effect television work Gamble described in 2025 was not mentioned in the October memo at all.

Edmonton Loses the Studio a Co-Founder Built

BioWare started in Edmonton in 1995 and sold to EA in 2007, before Mass Effect or Dragon Age existed. Then-chief executive John Riccitiello called it one of the most respected studios in the industry and said it would help EA on quality, online play, and new intellectual property. Nineteen years later the Edmonton workspace is the part of that bet EA is winding up.

Co-founder Trent Oster, now chief executive of Beamdog, called it a pretty sad day. He said that more than 30 years ago they built something he still thinks was pretty awesome, and that it is pretty sad to see the end of the dream.

We went from a bunch of clueless kids trying to make a game just for the hell of it to literally being the best in the world at what we did. During the time I was there, it went from six people to 420, and it was just a massive growth. Honestly, it was an amazing experience.

Trent Oster, BioWare co-founder, to CBC Radio

The studio that closed is not the 420-person shop Oster described. Most of the people who made Knights of the Old Republic, the original Mass Effect trilogy, and the first Dragon Age games had already left, been laid off, or been sent to other EA teams. What EA shut down was the remaining Mass Effect cell and the name on the door.

THE GAMES BIOWARE PUT ON ITS FAREWELL LIST

  • Baldur’s Gate: The Dungeons & Dragons RPGs that made the studio’s name in the late 1990s.
  • Neverwinter Nights: The toolset-driven follow-up that spread BioWare’s rules and mods.
  • Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic: The 2003 Knights story that still defines a lot of Star Wars RPG talk.
  • Dragon Age and Mass Effect: The original IP that EA actually bought the studio to own.
  • Anthem: The 2019 live-service miss BioWare chose to list beside the hits.

The farewell went out on BioWare’s own account the same afternoon as the Bloomberg-sourced cuts. The studio thanked players for debating choices and falling in love with characters, then said its focus was the people who put their hearts into the games.

The Mass Effect License Stays Inside EA

EA did not say the Mass Effect or Dragon Age names are for sale. It did not assign the canceled build to Motive, Respawn, or anyone else. The memo’s offer to affected staff is help looking for other jobs inside EA, plus a Global Town Hall in November. That is an off-ramp for people, not for the sequel.

Some of the loudest posts that followed treated the closure as a verdict on BioWare’s later writing. The colder reading is simpler. A privately held publisher that just paid $55 billion, and that already missed a Dragon Age target by nearly half, declined to fund a small team through several more years of a single-player RPG. Other shops can still make games in that shape. They will not be making this one, in this building, with this staff.

The version of Mass Effect fans have been teasing apart since 2020 is over. The rights sit with the same company that just closed the studio which invented them.

Frequently Asked Questions

When Is N7 Day, and What Does N7 Mean?

N7 Day is November 7 each year. In the games, N7 is the top proficiency rank in the Systems Alliance military, shown as a red stripe on black armor, which is why BioWare used that date for trailers and blogs, including the 2020 next-chapter note and Gamble’s 2025 exclusive-focus post.

Was the Canceled Game Officially Titled Mass Effect 5?

EA and BioWare never printed that name. They called it the next Mass Effect project. Fans used Mass Effect 5 because Andromeda was set in another galaxy, so a Milky Way sequel after the original trilogy felt like the next numbered main game, even though no box ever said so.

When Did the First Mass Effect Ship, and What Engine Did It Use?

Mass Effect launched on November 20, 2007, on Unreal Engine 3, with an M rating for blood, language, partial nudity, sexual themes, and violence. BioWare was already an EA studio by then; the purchase closed the same year, before that first game reached stores.

When Did EA Stockholders Approve the $55 Billion Sale?

Stockholders approved the deal at a special meeting on December 22, 2025, after the consortium’s agreement was announced on September 29, 2025. The close came on August 4, 2026, at $210 a share in cash, and the common stock was then delisted from NASDAQ.

Did EA Say It Will Help BioWare Staff Find Other Work?

The October 21 memo said EA will support impacted employees in exploring other jobs inside the company and will treat those colleagues with care and respect. Weber and Tinson also told staff a Global Town Hall in November would cover what the changes mean for individual teams.
