Ocarina of Time Remake Follows the Zelda Switch 2

Nintendo set November 5, 2026 for the Ocarina of Time remake on Switch 2, a week after a Zelda-themed console that does not include the game. The date came in the September 8 Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, with digital pre-orders at $59.99 and a $69.99 physical disc that uses textured foil on the first print.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is due November 19, which is the comparison most roundups reached for. The product list Nintendo actually put on sale starts October 29 and keeps going into 2027.

The Zelda Switch 2 Ships Without the Game

On October 29, seven days before the remake, Nintendo starts selling the Switch 2 The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition. US store listings put that system at $519.99. The box holds the console, dock, and matching Joy-Con 2. It does not hold Ocarina of Time.

Series producer Eiji Aonuma used the Direct to walk through early gameplay, then Nintendo stacked hardware around the same Triforce design: a Pro Controller at $99.99, a Pro Controller with a display stand at $109.99 (Nintendo New York, Nintendo San Francisco, and Nintendo Store only), and a carrying case with a screen protector at $39.99. All of those land October 29. All of them are sold separately from the game.

THE OCTOBER 29 HARDWARE STACK

That $10 gap between download and cart is the split Nintendo has used on other Switch 2 releases this year. Walmart listed the physical game at $59.99 on September 10, matching the eShop number. The download is estimated at 27 GB and supports TV, tabletop, and handheld play, plus HDR on compatible sets.

What the Remake Changes From 1998

Nintendo’s store copy calls this “a classic tale, built from the ground up for the Nintendo Switch 2 system.” It is a Switch 2 exclusive, the first Zelda that does not also exist on the original Switch. The 1998 Nintendo 64 game sold more than 7 million copies. This version keeps that plot and those dungeons, then changes how Link moves through them.

WHAT CHANGED IN THE REMAKE

• Jump button: Link no longer auto-hops at every ledge; a dedicated jump is mapped to a face button.
• Sprint on hold: Holding the roll input turns into a dash across Hyrule Field, with no stamina bar attached.
• Right-stick camera: The locked market camera is gone, including inside Castle Town.
• Day and night in towns: The clock keeps moving indoors, so shops and streets no longer freeze when you enter.
• Voiced, longer talk: Cutscenes are fully voiced and NPCs have more lines than the N64 script.
• Orchestra score: MIDI is replaced with a recorded symphony, and sounds were refreshed across the board.
• Threads of Time: A story tracker shows completed beats, the next objective, and a tapestry that fills in as you go.

Nintendo’s own feature list also promises overhauled visuals and voiced cutscenes, faster loads, and snappier animations down to the texture of each material. Producer Hidemaro Fujibayashi used the same Direct to show Zelda Notes, the Switch App layer already used on the Switch 2 editions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

Jump, Sprint, and a Free Camera

Aonuma has said players used to roll across Hyrule Field because that was the fastest way to travel. Holding that same input now becomes a run, which is the change anyone who learned Zelda on Breath of the Wild will feel first. Swimming and diving were also rebuilt so underwater movement is closer to those later games than to the N64 tank controls. Z-targeting stays.

The camera is the other tell. Ocarina of Time on Nintendo 64 could not give you a free right stick. This version does, including a top-down angle, and interiors were remodeled so the extra view has something to show. That is also where the new look is getting argued: the rebuild is denser and more literal than Breath of the Wild’s painterly hills, and comparison clips with the 64 and 3DS versions started circulating the day after the Direct.

Voices Fill the Cutscenes Now

Expanded talk is the quiet change. Characters Link meets are fully voiced in longer scenes, and Nintendo says they have “a great deal more to say.” Threads of Time sits on top of that as a modern objective list, which the 1998 game never had. Zelda Notes adds a daily log of kills and time spent, Gossip Quests that use hint photos to point at in-game spots, a touchscreen ocarina, and a quiz with over 2,000 questions. Extra quiz tries cost rupees pulled from the save.

Master Quest, the mirrored harder dungeons that shipped with the 2011 3DS remake, has not been listed among the Switch 2 features. Nintendo has also not named a co-developer. Until the credits roll, the publisher is the only studio on the box.

Two Ocarinas Arrive Later This Year

The instrument is the one new input that is not a button. If Link has learned a song, you can hum it into the Switch 2 microphone and he will play it. Nintendo says the game will also hear “a playable version for the musically inclined” and an electric model from HORI, both due later in 2026. Aonuma demonstrated the mic trick on stage with Epona’s Song; Lon Lon Ranch answered.

HORI’s listing is blunter than the Direct was. The Electric OCARINA OF TIME costs $49.99, uses finger-hole buttons, and includes a stand. Free Play lets you tap notes. Auto-Play Mode for 12 songs fires a full in-game melody from one button. It has a volume dial and a headphone jack. It needs three AA batteries, which are not in the box.

The Electric OCARINA OF TIME is an electronic toy and is not a real ocarina. It is operated using its buttons and finger holes and is not played by blowing into it. This product is not a game controller.

You do not need either plastic instrument. Humming is built into the console. Zelda Notes also puts a virtual ocarina on a phone, with guided play, autoplay, and QR sharing for custom scores. The $49.99 unit is a speaker that the Switch 2 can hear, plus a shelf object. Nintendo’s second, “playable” ocarina still has no US price on the Direct write-up.

Nintendo Already Ran This Play on 3DS

In June 2011, Grezzo’s Ocarina of Time 3D arrived on a handheld that had been stumbling since launch. Nintendo said the remake sold 283,000 copies in the United States during a partial June window, then 1.08 million worldwide by the end of that month, about one copy for every four 3DS systems then in the wild. As of December 2022 it sat at 6.44 million, the best-selling Zelda remake on record.

THE 2011 3DS RUN

• US partial June: 283,000 copies after a mid-month launch, enough to put a 3DS exclusive in the top 10.
• Worldwide by June 30: 1.08 million, the second 3DS game to cross a million.
• Life to date: 6.44 million as of December 2022, ahead of Link’s Awakening on Switch at 6.08 million and Skyward Sword HD at 3.85 million.

That 3DS cart also packed Master Quest, a boss rush, and hint videos. The new remake is chasing a different job: it is the first Zelda built only for Switch 2, priced under the $70 physical line Nintendo has used on bigger 2026 releases, and timed for the console’s first full holiday. The 2011 lesson was that this particular 1998 game still moves hardware. Nintendo is running that lesson again, then selling the hardware a week early and unbundled.

The Two-Week Gap Before GTA 6

Fourteen days separate November 5 and Grand Theft Auto 6 on November 19. That is a real calendar fact, and it is the one every preview used. A player who only wants a single-player adventure can finish Ocarina of Time before Rockstar takes the month. A player who wants both still has to spend twice in the same pay cycle, on two different machines.

Nintendo’s own sequence is tighter than that GTA gap. Anniversary hardware is on sale October 29. The remake is November 5. Rockstar is November 19. The Zelda Switch 2 owner who also wants the foil cart, the Pro Controller, and the electric ocarina is spending well before anyone boots Los Santos. The two-week buffer protects Nintendo’s attach numbers more than it protects a completionist’s evening.

Pricing helps that attach. At $59.99 digital, the remake sits below several other Switch 2 launches this year. The foil physical at $69.99 is the collector SKU, “while supplies last,” which is how Nintendo has trained people to order the cart on day one. The $519.99 console is the SKU that actually matters for the fiscal quarter.

LEGO, Concerts, and a 2027 Movie

Amiibo of Young Link and Young Zelda, the figures most previews treated as launch merch, are dated 2027. Nintendo’s store says the exact day will come later. Each is listed at $24.99. Tap them in the remake and you get masks that mimic the old graphical style. Any older Zelda amiibo still grants extras. The figures were already marked sold out on the US Nintendo Store after the Direct, months before they exist.

The rest of the anniversary is a 2027 product year that uses November 5 as the first software peak, not the last event.

7. April 30, 2027: Live-action film The Legend of Zelda opens worldwide from Nintendo, Arad Productions, and Sony Pictures.

Nintendo Museum in Kyoto adds a Zelda ticket design from September 9, new photo spots from November 5, and a Super Family Restaurant later in fall 2026. Nintendo Today! started daily Zelda cards the day after the Direct. That is not required to play the remake. All of it is how a 40-year-old series is being billed through the Switch 2’s first holidays and into a movie weekend.

Japan Queues Formed at Yodobashi Camera

After the September 8 Direct, the US Nintendo Store listed the $519.99 anniversary Switch 2 as sold out. The $99.99 Pro Controller, the $109.99 stand bundle, the $39.99 case, and the $24.99 amiibo went with it. Australia’s store emptied the console and the Pro Controller too. Listings then showed up on resale sites at a markup.

In Tokyo, online reservations vanished overnight, so people went to Yodobashi Camera to lock a console and a copy of the remake at the counter. That is the tell. The software date is November 5. The thing people stood in line for on September 9 was a painted Switch 2 that still needs a $59.99 download or a $69.99 cart a week after it arrives.

Nintendo has not added Master Quest, has not named the studio beside its own logo, and has not priced the breathable ocarina. It has priced the console, the controller, the case, the cart, the download, and HORI’s button-operated toy. November 5 is when Hyrule opens. October 29 is when the register opens.
