Ubisoft Moves to Close RedLynx After a Hit Remake

Ubisoft proposes closing Trials studio RedLynx and cutting 70 Singapore jobs, weeks after Black Flag Resynced beat its full-year sales plan.

Ubisoft told staff on October 14, 2026 that it proposes to close RedLynx in Finland, putting up to 52 jobs at risk. The same day it said 70 positions at Ubisoft Singapore had been impacted to match future production needs.

Singapore led Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, which sold 3.5 million copies in 14 days after a July 9 launch. RedLynx made the Trials motorbike games, and its last major original release shipped in 2019.

Ubisoft Moves to Shut RedLynx and Cut Singapore

The Finnish close is still a proposal, subject to the local change negotiation process the company named in its statement. Singapore’s reductions are already in motion. Together they put up to 122 jobs on the line.

Ubisoft said it values both teams and pledged to handle the process with care. It did not publish a separate reason for ending RedLynx, beyond the wider reset of how studios are staffed.

Both teams had been placed in the Creative Network, the shared production pool that feeds other groups rather than holding a franchise profit-and-loss of its own. A studio in that pool can ship a hit and still be treated as spare capacity.

People familiar with the internal review say RedLynx has no current project, and that shrinking the roster would not keep the office viable. That is a headquarters assignment problem as much as a studio one. A team cannot ship a game it was never given.

Black Flag Resynced Already Cleared Its Year

Black Flag Resynced is a ground-up remake of the 2013 pirate game, rebuilt in the Anvil engine and led by Ubisoft Singapore under Vantage Studios. It launched on July 9, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.

RESYNCED SOLD-IN, FIRST TWO WEEKS

  • Day 1: 2 million copies sold into distribution.
  • First week: more than 3 million, confirmed on July 17.
  • First 14 days: 3.5 million, enough to beat Ubisoft’s full-year plan.
  • Q1 backdrop: group net bookings of €256 million, down 9% from a year earlier.

Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft’s co-founder and chief executive, called the launch an encouraging proof point for the new setup. He said the remake was the highest-rated Assassin’s Creed title since the original Black Flag, and he thanked the teams whose work brought it to life.

Those thanks landed in the first-quarter results in late July. On October 14 the same Singapore studio lost 70 roles so it could “align the studio with upcoming production needs.” Ubisoft still calls the office an important part of global production. Store listings have also pointed to a Switch 2 edition, which would need a team to finish it.

Singapore opened in 2008 as a support shop and later built the naval combat that several Assassin’s Creed games used, then led Skull and Bones, which finally shipped in 2024 after a long, delayed production. A remake that clears its yearly forecast in a fortnight does not, under this model, freeze the headcount that made it.

Helsinki’s Trials Shop Ran Out of Work

Brothers Atte and Antti Ilvessuo founded RedLynx on August 17, 2000, first as a small Helsinki shop making mobile, browser, and interactive-TV games. Trials HD on Xbox Live Arcade in 2009 was the break. By May 2011 the core game and its add-ons had sold 2 million copies.

Ubisoft bought the studio on November 2, 2011. Guillemot, in the acquisition note, praised brands with high replay value and long tail sales and said physics and asynchronous play would travel across digital platforms. RedLynx had already shipped more than 100 titles. Tero Virtala, then the studio’s chief executive, said the buy would let the team chase bigger brands on more screens.

Trials Evolution followed in 2012, then Fusion, a Far Cry crossover, a mobile spin-off, and Trials Rising in 2019, the last big standalone. After that the Helsinki office drifted into support, including work on Star Wars Outlaws and a Switch 2 port of that game, plus a Stadia version of The Division 2. Virtala later ran Remedy Entertainment. Ilvessuo left and started Channel 37.

REDLYNX FROM BUYOUT TO EMPTY SLATE

  1. November 2, 2011: Ubisoft buys RedLynx after Trials HD’s digital run.
  2. 2019: Trials Rising ships; it is the last major original console and PC Trials game.
  3. 2023: mobile title Gwen’s Getaway begins a soft launch.
  4. December 2024: Ubisoft cancels Gwen’s Getaway.
  5. October 2025: a plan to cut a maximum of 60 jobs and move the studio onto “small screens,” with two unannounced mobile games in lead.
  6. October 14, 2026: closure proposed for up to 52 remaining roles, with no current project on the books.

Almost 15 years after the buy, the long tail Guillemot described is still in the catalogue. The studio hired to extend it is the part being wound down.

The Creative Network Cannot Own a Franchise

On January 21, 2026 Ubisoft announced a reset built around five specialized Creative Houses, each meant to hold a genre, a brand list, and its own financial results. The new model was due to start operating in early April. Guillemot said the company would also close several studios and keep restructuring across the group.

That reset sat on a brutal year. Full-year figures published on May 20, 2026 showed an €1,475.2 million IFRS net loss attributable to owners, on net bookings of €1,525.1 million, down 17.4%. The group discontinued 6 games, including the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, and gave 7 others more time.

WHERE THE BRANDS NOW LIVE

  • Vantage Studios: Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six, the house that published Resynced.
  • Massive Entertainment: the former Creative House 2, covering The Division, Ghost Recon, and Splinter Cell after a September rebrand.
  • Live house: For Honor, The Crew, Riders Republic, Brawlhalla, Skull and Bones.
  • Fantasy house: Anno, Rayman, Prince of Persia, Beyond Good & Evil, Might and Magic.
  • Casual house: Just Dance, Ketchapp, Uno, Invincible: Guarding the Globe, and other small-screen brands.

The Houses own the relationship with players and the P&L. The Creative Network, in the same January note, is a set of studios that supply production capacity and extra craft, project by project, under the House that holds the brand. RedLynx and Singapore were parked there. Trials was never named as a House brand. When the Network has no brief, the office has no product.

This year Ubisoft has already closed studios in Stockholm, Halifax, Winnipeg, and Belgrade. RedLynx is the next name on that list if the Finnish talks end the way the proposal reads.

The Small-Screens Plan Did Not Last a Year

On October 22, 2025 Ubisoft tabled a restructuring proposal for RedLynx that would have cut a maximum of 60 jobs, mostly in production and administration, and turned a multiplatform studio into one “specialised in small screens.” The Snowdrop engine group was carved out of that cut. Two unannounced mobile games were supposed to be the new lead work.

Celine Pasula, then managing director of Ubisoft RedLynx, said the plan reflected difficult choices after careful thought, and that the studio would keep a role driving technical work on phones and other small screens. Collective talks with staff were set to run through the end of November 2025.

Gwen’s Getaway, the last original RedLynx shipped, had already been cancelled in December 2024 after a 2023 soft launch. The two unnamed mobile projects did not become a public slate. By October 14, 2026, 357 days after that small-screens pitch, the company was no longer arguing for a smaller Helsinki studio. It was arguing for none.

Trials players who spent years in those offices were not shocked. A long-running coach who had worked on site in Helsinki said the notice still hurt. Fan archivists have already started gathering the series’ history so the catalogue is not only a store page. The sharper complaint underneath the grief is simple: a support studio without a brief was always going to fail the sustainability test the Houses now use.

What the Finnish Talks Can Still Change

Finnish rules require employer-employee talks before a company with at least 50 staff makes a decision that wipes out roles. Ubisoft used that process in 2025 for the 60-job plan, and it is using it again. Until those talks close, RedLynx is not legally shut.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • Singapore: 70 positions have already been impacted; the studio stays open.
  • RedLynx: up to 52 roles are in a closure proposal, not a finished shutdown.
  • Trials: Ubisoft still owns the brand; no new Trials game is assigned.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • End date: no completion date for the Finnish talks has been published.
  • IP plan: no buyer, revival, or House home for Trials has been named.
  • Switch 2: a Black Flag Resynced edition has shown up in listings, not in a dated Ubisoft ship plan.

Singapore’s remaining staff will keep doing production work the Houses send them. That is the deal the Network offers: stay useful to someone else’s slate, or become a line on the next rightsizing memo.

Antti Ilvessuo Left a Box Dated 2113

Ilvessuo, who created Trials, left years ago. He now runs Channel 37, and the studio’s survival game is listed as The Last Caretaker on Steam in early access, with a 1.0 release aimed at spring 2027 on PC and Xbox. Asked about the closure, he did not plead for the office. He pointed at a joke the old team buried in a 2012 game.

I’m proud of what we built at RedLynx, but my part in that story ended years ago. In 2012, Trials Evolution’s riddle started, and its final chapter is set in 2113. So even something we made back then still has most of its future ahead of it.

I don’t know who – or what – will open that box. But someone has to care enough to carry the key all that way. That’s what matters. Making something that will still mean something, something that has weight and history in a world that may be totally different in the future. Onwards!

Antti Ilvessuo, Trials creator

The riddle still has 87 years on the clock. Ubisoft owns the box. After October 14, it is proposing to stop paying the people in Helsinki who would have been the obvious ones to carry the key.

The team at RedLynx has developed exceptionally strong digital brands that stand out for their high replay value, their long tail sales and their multiplatform positioning. We are delighted to welcome RedLynx to the Ubisoft family.

Yves Guillemot, chief executive, November 2011 acquisition statement

The brands are still on store shelves. The family welcome is now a change-negotiation notice and a 70-person cut in the studio that just beat its year.
