Zynga Puts a New Ned Stark on Sale in September

Zynga will ship a new Ned Stark in Game of Thrones: Legends on September 23, titled The Hand of the King. The studio’s August 24 news post calls him a new version of a champion the match-3 RPG has sold since its July 2024 launch.

Brienne of Tarth arrives first, on August 26. Lyanna Mormont follows on September 9. Ned closes a three-week Stark stack built to be bought together.

A New Version of Ned Stark

Screen Rant framed the date as Sean Bean’s Lord of Winterfell coming back after 15 years off screen. The game’s own language is smaller and more precise. “Starting with Brienne of Tarth, The True Knight. Then Lyanna Mormont, the young Lady of Bear Island. And, after them, a new version of Ned Stark is coming,” the Legends team wrote on August 24.

That wording matters because Ned never left this product. He has been on the roster from launch, and the live game already treats big names as titled variants. Jon Snow exists as Bastard of Winterfell, Battle of the Bastards, and King in the North. Daenerys has more than one card. Ned now gets the same treatment, with a King’s Landing job title printed on the new kit.

The official account posted the calendar the same day. It is a live-ops note, not a casting announcement.

Bean’s Ned died in season 1 of the HBO series and later turned up in flashbacks. Legends, which is free to download with optional purchases including paid random items, has used his face and kit as everyday inventory. House Leaders already pair him with Catelyn, Robb, Arya, Sansa, and Bran. September 23 adds another copy with a different job.

110 Million Deaths and Counting

For the game’s first anniversary in July 2025, Zynga published usage jokes that read like a punchline waiting for this drop. PocketGamer.biz’s Aaron Astle reported the figures, including AppMagic’s spend estimates and stats Zynga confirmed in-house. Ned was the most-used champion and team leader of year one. He had also died 110 million times inside the puzzle battles.

Jon Snow and Beric Dondarrion had been resurrected more than 16 million times in that same year. The honor-bound lord who lasted one season on television is the unit players parked in front of the gems and watched fall, over and over. A February 2025 developer diary already described him as a frontline tank whose healing scaled with max health and whose leader ability guaranteed ICE each time it fired.

The public argument that still travels on X is not about this mobile kit. It is the old one: whether Ned was any good as Hand of the King. Zynga just printed that job on a summon banner.

What the September 23 Kit Does

The new Ned is labeled The Hand of the King, a protective support. He takes burdens off allies, restores teammates who fight beside him, and still lands “swift, punishing judgment,” according to the August 24 post. That is a different sheet from the Ice tank players have been gearing since 2024.

In November 2025 the studio rolled out Iconic Items for ten launch-era names. Ned’s was Ice. At Star Rank 3 the Ice iconic ability for Ned, Know The Men Who Follow You, grants Tenacity when an ally uses a Skill. At higher levels a Stark ally also gives him Taunt, and a taunting Ned grants the whole team Durability for the turn, a shield against area attacks. Ice also boosts health, hit chance, and Tenacity. That kit is still in the game. The September card does not retire it.

Brienne and Lyanna are being sold as the other two pieces of the same engine, with staggered dates so the banner stays live for a month.

Brienne already had a card. Her November 2025 Iconic Item was Oathkeeper, an HP Guard that trips at 50 percent health. A 2025 developer diary even nudged that older Brienne toward Baratheon synergy with Barristan Selmy. The August 26 unit is a freeze sweeper joining the Stark faction, which is how the live game reprints a character without deleting the first one.

Brienne Lands Tomorrow, Then Lyanna

Today is August 25. The True Knight is a day away. Lyanna, who has not had a prior champion page in the game’s news archive the way Ned and Brienne have, is the actual new face in the trio. Ned is the name that will travel outside the player base, and he is last on purpose.

That spacing is how a live game keeps a house spending through a whole season rather than on a single night. Goldroad Passes, which the official calendars keep reminding players must be unlocked by purchase, have already sold shards for Legendary Ned, for Jon Snow (King in the North), and for Ser Duncan the Tall from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The North is not a one-off event. It is a lane on the monthly board.

December 2025 added Bran Stark and his direwolf Summer, with a listed parent synergy in which Ned diverts damage and Catelyn heals. The old Ned is still doing dad duty on those teams while the new one is being written as Hand of the King. Two Neds is the point of the business, not a glitch in the lore.

Owning All Three Completes the Stark Stack

The news post does not hide the sales pitch. “Brienne of Tarth, Lyanna Mormont and Ned Stark are formidable Champions individually, but their greatest value emerges when they fight together,” the team wrote. Owning all three “gives Starks a new play boost.” Brienne savages the enemy. Lyanna keeps momentum and answers control. Ned inspires and protects while taking burdens onto himself.

Brienne’s oath, Lyanna’s allegiance and Ned’s honor are different expressions of the same Northern principle: The lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.

The line is George R.R. Martin’s, now serving as a collection bonus. A player who already built around Ice-Ned, Catelyn, and Bran is being asked to open a second Ned and two more legendaries to unlock the pack effect. That is the hidden bill. The three-week calendar trains the house to hold shards, tokens, and Goldroad progress until the Hand of the King banner, then spend to complete the set.

Legends launched as a puzzle RPG in which House Leaders match gems to charge skills and raid each other in real time. Zynga’s store page still sells the pitch as assembling champions from both TV series, Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, then pairing them with gear. The August stack is that loop aimed at one house: freeze, chain, protect, repeat, pay.

Year-One Spend Versus Slots and Conquest

The game went worldwide on July 25, 2024, under a Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment license on behalf of HBO, with Zynga shipping it as a Take-Two label. The launch trailer put Kit Harington in a members’ club, playing the match-3 between cuts of Westeros. “This is a true love letter to the fans, of whom the franchise would be nothing without,” Harington said in the Take-Two release. The game was also a title sponsor of House of the Dragon on Max for seasons 1 and 2.

Love letters still post a number. AppMagic, cited by PocketGamer.biz, put first-year player spending on Google Play and the App Store at $23.6 million. The title made its first $1 million in 14 days, then peaked in September 2024 at $2.9 million for the month and $126,000 on September 21, its best day of year one. Soft launch had already taken $326,000, and global year-one spend was put at more than $23.3 million.

Astle noted that Legends’ first year was about 53 percent of Slots Casino’s year-one take and about 19 percent of Conquest’s. Yaron Leyvand, Zynga’s executive vice president of mobile games, said at the anniversary, “we love seeing the incredible houses that are being built and the ongoing engagement from our community.” The September 2026 Stark stack is that engagement model in miniature: a named reunion, a paid pass sitting behind shards, and a set bonus that only lights up if the house owns all three.

Ice Still Belongs to the First Ned

Nothing in the August 24 post says the original Ned, or Ice, or the Bran parent pairing, is going away. The live game already runs several Jons at once. The new Hand of the King is another row on the same board, timed so Brienne is in players’ hands before Lyanna, and Lyanna is in before Ned.

Screen Rant’s write-up still helps the date travel beyond the people who open the Goldroad every week. The studio that actually ships the code was careful not to claim a television return. It claimed a new version, a faction tag, and a pack bonus, then signed off with the pack-survives line. Brienne is playable tomorrow. The Hand of the King goes on sale four weeks later, in a game that already killed him 110 million times.
