New parliament opposition group names MP Abdirashid Mohamed Hiddig as their chairperson.
NAIROBI (Somali Update Online) — Nearly hundred Members of Somalia's Federal Parliament have concluded a consultative meeting in Nairobi, Kenya and announced a new opposition movement against the current Mogadishu government, Somali Update reports.
In a press release, the parliament opposition group called themselves "Progressive” or moving forward group named Abdirashid Mohamed Hiddig as their chairperson as they also promised to complete the names of other officials of the group.
"We have seen how the current regime failed to fulfill its promises for the Somali people.” The group’s release said criticizing the cabinet of President Farmajo and Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire.
According to sources familiar with the group’s meetings in the past week in Nairobi, the group are attempting to file a motion against the cabinet to the Federal Parliament after it returns from the current Ramadan Leave early in July.
This new opposition group becomes the first parliament-led opposition group against President Farmajo’s Peace and Livelihood government elected in February by the same parliament.
Elected on February 8th, President Farmajo has last week completed his first three months in office as security remains the main challenge facing his government. The new Prime Minister Mr, Khaire also formed his cabinet in March.
But critics say that most of the new opposition group started this initiative after they failed to gain personal interest from the new government.
It is not yet clear how, if the proposed motion against the new cabinet can go through, despite the number of the opposition lawmakers are considerably influential politicians.
