MOGADISHU (Somali Update Online) — The Ministry of Ports and Sea Transportation has warned Somali export and import traders using sea transportation against the start of THE 2017 Monsoon season which could risk the lives of the travelers and their commodities in the sea, Somali Update reports.
The ministry’s Director General Mohamed Osman Dhagahtur said the owners of import and export agencies should caution traveling on the sea between the start of June and until the end of September as storms likely to peak during the season.
"Those using vessels and light ships whose weights are below 1200 and 1500 metric tones should postpone their plans of cruising during the Monsoon season to avoid the risk of sinking.” the message from the Director General said.
Somali business companies usually transport their cargo to Somalia from Dubai in United Arab Emirates, India and China through sea and there have been several incidents in the past where goods and commodities worth millions of dollars lost following heavy Monsoon winds.
The ministry further advised cargo and freight handlers to maintain using bigger ships which can avoid the risk of sinking during the fourth months Monsoon season.
