Mufti and scholar Sheikh Sharif Abdinur has died in Mecca, aged 76.
MOGADISHU (Somali Update Online) — Respected Somali mufti and scholar Sheikh Sharif Abdinur has died in Mecca, Saudi on Thursday after illness, his family said. The sheikh who publicly denounced extremism and issued fatwas rejecting Al-Shabab's interpretation of the jihad has died aged 76. He left a wife and nine children behind.
In the past decade he has been living in exile in Saudi and Kuwait.
Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has condoled on the death of the cleric.
"On behalf of Somali Federal Republic, I extend my condolences to the Muslim Ummah, the family and the Somali nation following the death of Sheikh Sharif Abdinur." President said in a statement released on Thursday.
"He was an expert in religion and has achieved great in educating the people." the statement added.
Born in Somali-Ethiopian region and educated in Azhar university in Egypt, Sharif Abdinur rose to prominence for giving lectures in former Somali National University and holding sessions in numerous mosques in Mogadishu in a time most of the young people desperately needed Islamic education.
He is respected in his expertise on areas of Fiqh "full comprehension" which technically refers to the body of Islamic law extracted from detailed Islamic sources studied in the principles of Islamic jurisprudence.
In 2009, he and other cleric became first to publicly reject Al-Shabab's so-called jihad "holy war" against Somalia's then Transitional Federal Government.
In the fatwah released from Saudi, the Muslim clerics called for dialogue to resolve the conflict, as they also urged the backing of the government.
