Elton John, the legendary musician and cultural icon, has had to make significant adjustments following the loss of vision in his right eye due to an infection. According to The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column, the 77-year-old hitmaker has even simplified his signature for the special edition of his new album, Who Believes In Angels? Instead of his traditional autograph, he now signs using just the initial ‘E’ followed by an ‘X’—a kiss for his fans.
Vision Troubles Have Impacted His Daily Life
Elton’s vision issues became publicly evident in December when he attended a charity gala event for The Devil Wears Prada, a musical he composed. Though he was present at London’s Dominion Theatre, he admitted that he couldn’t fully see the performance. However, he was still able to appreciate the music, expressing his admiration for the cast’s talent.
“As some of you may know, I have had issues and now I have lost my sight. I haven’t been able to see the performance, but I have enjoyed it,” he told the audience. His signature oversized, red-tinted glasses—which have long been a part of his flamboyant image—took on a new, practical purpose as he adapted to his condition.
A Challenging Summer in the South of France
The music legend first disclosed his vision struggles in an interview with Good Morning America, revealing that the trouble started in July while he was in the South of France. A severe infection led to the loss of sight in his right eye, leaving him with only his left eye, which he admits isn’t in the best condition either.
“It’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see. My left eye is not the greatest,” he shared. While doctors have given him hope that his condition may improve, the uncertainty surrounding his vision has placed limitations on his work.
Impact on His Music Career
For someone whose career has spanned over five decades, the sudden change has been a difficult adjustment. Elton, known for his meticulous approach to songwriting and performance, admitted that his ability to work on new music has been hindered. “I can do something like this [public events], but going into the studio and recording? I don’t know. Because I can’t see a lyric, for a start.”
Despite the challenges, Elton remains hopeful. The possibility of regaining some vision means he hasn’t completely ruled out new projects. But for now, his focus is on adapting to his current situation with the support of those closest to him.
A Rock-Solid Support System
Throughout this ordeal, Elton has leaned on his husband, David Furnish, who has been by his side every step of the way. During his speech at The Devil Wears Prada musical gala, he took a moment to thank David, calling him his “rock.”
“To my husband, who’s been my rock because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews… it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it and it sounded good tonight, OK. Thank you for coming!”
Elton’s resilience in the face of adversity is a testament to his unwavering spirit. Fans around the world continue to support him, hoping that his vision improves and that he can return to doing what he loves most—creating music that has defined generations.
