Chinese tech major PCI-Suntek Technology is setting its sights on Vietnam’s burgeoning railway sector. During a recent meeting with Vietnamese Transport Minister Nguyen Van Thang, PCI-Suntek’s chairman and CEO, Liu Wei, expressed the company’s keen interest in developing, supplying equipment, and operating railway projects in Vietnam. This move comes as Vietnam aims to expand its rail network significantly by 2050, presenting ample opportunities for collaboration and technological exchange.
Strategic Collaboration for Railway Development
PCI-Suntek Technology’s interest in Vietnam’s railway projects marks a significant step towards enhancing bilateral cooperation. Liu Wei highlighted that Vietnam faces similar challenges in railway development that China previously encountered. By leveraging China’s advanced technologies, PCI-Suntek aims to address these issues effectively. Minister Thang welcomed this proposal, emphasizing the potential for collaboration between Vietnamese and Chinese firms in railway development and operation. He also stressed the importance of technology transfer to ensure sustainable growth in Vietnam’s transport sector.
Vietnam’s ambitious plans include developing a rail network of 16 routes covering 4,802 kilometers by 2030 and expanding to 25 routes covering 6,354 kilometers by 2050. The North-South high-speed railway, particularly the Hanoi-Vinh and Ho Chi Minh City-Nha Trang sections, is a priority. Additionally, projects like the Long Thanh Airport to HCMC’s Thu Thiem district railway and the Bien Hoa-Vung Tau railway are attracting foreign investment.
The Vietnamese government requires all foreign investors and contractors to transfer technological expertise when participating in local transport projects. This policy aims to build local capacity and ensure the long-term sustainability of infrastructure developments.
Expanding Metro Networks in Major Cities
Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are set to develop a total of 14 urban metro lines by 2035, further enhancing urban mobility. PCI-Suntek’s involvement in these projects could bring significant advancements in metro technology and operations. The company’s expertise in urban railway development positions it as a valuable partner for Vietnam’s metro expansion plans.
In recent discussions, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh engaged with executives from Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Co. Ltd. and Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina). Both companies expressed their interest in Vietnam’s metro projects, highlighting the potential for collaboration in technology and workforce training. These engagements underscore Vietnam’s commitment to leveraging international expertise to develop its urban transport infrastructure.
The metro projects in Hanoi and HCMC aim to alleviate traffic congestion and provide efficient public transportation options. By integrating advanced technologies and best practices from China, Vietnam can accelerate the development of its metro systems and improve urban mobility.
Future Prospects and International Cooperation
Vietnam’s railway sector is poised for significant growth, with multiple international collaborations on the horizon. The country has been in talks with China for cooperation on three railways linking the two nations, with two connecting to Guangxi province and one to Yunnan province. The Vietnam-China joint declarations of 2022 and 2023 outlined plans to develop the 388-kilometer Lao Cai-Hanoi-Hai Phong railway at an estimated cost of $11 billion.
In addition to Chinese partnerships, Vietnam is also exploring collaborations with Japan and South Korea. Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Ito Naoki recently expressed Japan’s willingness to support Vietnam in developing transportation projects, including the North-South high-speed railway. Similarly, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol discussed potential cooperation during a meeting with PM Chinh, focusing on financing and technological support.
These international partnerships are crucial for Vietnam’s ambitious railway development plans. By tapping into global expertise and resources, Vietnam aims to build a modern, efficient, and sustainable railway network that meets the needs of its growing population and economy.
