Manchester City showed their class and quality as they defeated Brentford 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night. The hosts controlled the game from start to finish, scoring three goals and keeping a clean sheet. City extended their winning streak to 13 games in all competitions, and moved 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
City opened the scoring in the 18th minute, when Kevin De Bruyne curled a brilliant shot into the top corner from outside the box. The Belgian midfielder was making his 250th appearance for the club, and marked the occasion with his fifth goal of the season.
Brentford tried to respond, but they struggled to create any clear chances against City’s solid defence. The visitors had only one shot on target in the whole game, and it came in the 89th minute, when Bryan Mbeumo forced a save from Ederson.
Gundogan and Foden add to the scoreline
City doubled their lead in the 56th minute, when Ilkay Gundogan tapped in from close range after a cross from Joao Cancelo. The German midfielder scored his 11th goal of the season, and his seventh in the last eight games. He is now the joint-top scorer in the Premier League, along with Mohamed Salah and Jamie Vardy.
City added a third goal in the 76th minute, when Phil Foden finished off a slick move involving Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva. The England international scored his ninth goal of the season, and his fourth in the last five games. He is now the club’s top scorer in all competitions.
City look unstoppable in their title defence
City have now won 18 of their 20 Premier League games this season, and have scored 56 goals and conceded only eight. They have the best attack and the best defence in the league, and they look unstoppable in their title defence. City have won their last eight Premier League games by an aggregate score of 25-1, and have kept 15 clean sheets in the process.
Brentford, on the other hand, have lost four of their last five Premier League games, and have slipped to 12th place in the table. They have scored only 23 goals and conceded 28 in their debut season in the top flight. They have shown some promising signs, but they need to improve their consistency and resilience.
City will face Southampton away in their next Premier League game on Saturday, while Brentford will host Norwich City at home on the same day.
