The Perth Wildcats have taken a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three NBL playoff series against the Tasmania JackJumpers, thanks to a stellar performance from Keanu Pinder. The forward scored 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and blocked four shots in the 89-81 victory at RAC Arena on Saturday.
Wildcats overcome slow start to dominate second half
The JackJumpers started the game with more energy and intensity, leading by as many as 11 points in the first quarter. They shot 50% from the field and 44% from the three-point line in the first half, while the Wildcats struggled to find their rhythm. The visitors held a 49-43 advantage at the main break.
However, the Wildcats came out of the locker room with a renewed focus and determination, outscoring the JackJumpers 26-14 in the third quarter. They tightened their defense, forcing 10 turnovers and limiting the JackJumpers to 32% shooting in the second half. They also found their groove on offense, with Pinder leading the way with 12 points in the third quarter alone.
Pinder shines in his playoff debut
Pinder, who missed last year’s NBL Finals due to a foot injury, was eager to make an impact in his playoff debut. He did not disappoint, as he showcased his versatility and athleticism on both ends of the floor. He scored from inside and outside, hitting two three-pointers and throwing down several dunks. He also protected the rim with his shot-blocking ability, denying the JackJumpers’ attempts to score in the paint.
Pinder said he was happy to contribute to the team’s win and thanked his teammates and coaches for their support. “It feels amazing. I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time. I’m just glad I could help the team get the win. The guys and the coaches have been great, they’ve been encouraging me and giving me confidence. I just wanted to play hard and do whatever I could to help the team,” he said.
JackJumpers fall short despite valiant effort
The JackJumpers did not give up easily, as they fought back in the fourth quarter and cut the deficit to four points with less than two minutes remaining. However, they could not complete the comeback, as the Wildcats made some clutch plays down the stretch. Bryce Cotton, who finished with 16 points and seven assists, hit a dagger three-pointer with 1:12 left to seal the deal for the Wildcats.
The JackJumpers were led by Josh Adams, who had 23 points and six rebounds. Clint Steindl added 15 points off the bench, while Will Magnay had 12 points and eight rebounds. The JackJumpers will have to regroup and bounce back in game two, which will be played in Hobart on Monday.
What’s next for both teams?
The Wildcats will look to close out the series and advance to the semifinals with a win on Monday. They will have to maintain their defensive intensity and offensive balance, as they had five players scoring in double figures in game one. They will also hope to get more production from their star guard Cotton, who shot 6-of-18 from the field and 2-of-9 from the three-point line in game one.
The JackJumpers will try to extend the series and force a game three, which will be played in Perth on Wednesday. They will have to improve their ball security and shot selection, as they committed 17 turnovers and shot 39% from the field and 31% from the three-point line in game one. They will also need to find a way to contain Pinder, who was the difference-maker for the Wildcats.
