In a momentous occasion, Salisbury Cathedral has extended its family by welcoming two new canons from Dorset. Reverend Sarah Godfrey and Reverend Jo Neary have been invited to take up their positions in Weymouth and the Slape stalls, respectively.
The New Canons
Reverend Sarah Godfrey
Revd. Godfrey currently serves as the acting team rector for the Golden Cap, representing 12 churches along the Jurassic Coast and across the Marshwood Vale. Her ministry extends to primary schools, and she actively governs two schools in Lyme Regis and Marshwood. Ordained as a deacon in Salisbury Cathedral in 2005, Revd. Godfrey brings a wealth of experience and dedication to her new role.
Reverend Jo Neary
Revd. Neary, a team vicar in the Beaminster Area Team in West Dorset, also serves as a part-time tutor for Rural Ministry and Mission at Sarum College. Her passion lies in rural pioneering, mission work, addressing rural poverty, and advocating for social justice. Additionally, she is deeply involved in ministry with rural schools, fostering connections within the community.
The College of Canons
The College of Canons plays a vital role within the cathedral’s governance. Meeting twice a year, it provides feedback on policy decisions made by the Chapter, the governing body of the cathedral, and offers insights into cathedral activities. These non-residentiary canons contribute diverse skills and experiences, ensuring that the interests and views of the diocese and its parishes continue to be heard by the cathedral.
A New Perspective
Joining the Dorset pair are two other canons appointed from Wiltshire: David Pain, who takes up the Heytesbury stall, and Reverend Keith Brindle, who assumes the Teynton Regis stall in the Cathedral Quire. Their varied backgrounds and expertise promise to enrich the cathedral’s community, and we eagerly anticipate their contributions.
