Leeds United maintained their impressive form in the Championship with a convincing 3-0 win over bottom-placed Rotherham United at Elland Road. Crysencio Summerville was the star of the show, scoring two goals and setting up another for Patrick Bamford.
Leeds dominate from the start
The hosts wasted no time in asserting their dominance, as Bamford opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a header from Summerville’s cross. It was the striker’s 18th goal of the season, making him the joint-top scorer in the league.
Leeds continued to create chances, with Rodrigo, Raphinha, and Kalvin Phillips all testing the Rotherham goalkeeper. The visitors, who had not won away from home in 28 games, struggled to cope with Leeds’ intensity and movement.
Summerville doubles the lead
The second half was more of the same, as Leeds doubled their lead in the 52nd minute. Summerville, who had been a constant threat on the right wing, cut inside and unleashed a powerful shot that flew past the keeper. It was the 19-year-old’s 14th goal in all competitions, making him the club’s second-highest scorer.
Rotherham’s misery was compounded when they conceded a penalty just eight minutes later, as defender Jake Rutter brought down Rodrigo in the box. Summerville stepped up and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner, completing his brace and sealing the win for Leeds.
Leeds keep up the pressure on the top two
The result means that Leeds remain third in the table, just one point behind second-placed Southampton and 12 points behind leaders Leicester. With 15 games left, Leeds have a realistic chance of securing automatic promotion to the Premier League, or at least a play-off spot.
Rotherham, on the other hand, are rooted to the bottom of the table, 13 points from safety. They have only won three games all season and have the worst defensive record in the league, conceding 57 goals. They face a daunting task of avoiding relegation, with games against Hull, Norwich, and Ipswich coming up.
Summerville praises his teammates
After the game, Summerville spoke to the media and praised his teammates for their performance. He said: “I’m very happy with the two goals and the assist, but the most important thing is the three points. We played very well as a team and we showed our quality. We have a lot of confidence and we want to keep winning games.”
He also thanked the fans for their support, saying: “The fans were amazing, they always are. They gave us a lot of energy and motivation. We want to make them proud and give them something to celebrate at the end of the season.”
