Coventry City scored a dramatic equaliser in the 95th minute to salvage a 2-2 draw against Plymouth Argyle at Home Park on Wednesday night. Liam Kitching turned in Victor Torp’s cross at the near post to cancel out Mickel Miller’s deflected goal that had put the hosts ahead in the 68th minute.
Coventry move into top six after thrilling draw
The Sky Blues moved into the top six of the Championship table after earning a hard-fought point on the road. They had to come from behind twice, as Morgan Whittaker and Miller gave Plymouth the lead in each half. Ellis Simms and Kitching were the heroes for Coventry, who showed resilience and character to avoid defeat.
Coventry had more chances and possession in the first half, but they could not find a way past Conor Hazard in the Plymouth goal. The goalkeeper made several saves to deny Matty Godden, Milan van Ewijk, and Torp. Plymouth’s best opportunity fell to Whittaker, who fired into the side netting from a tight angle.
Plymouth take the lead through Whittaker
The second half was more open and entertaining, as both teams went for the win. Plymouth broke the deadlock in the 55th minute, when Whittaker finished off a slick move with a low shot from inside the box. It was his second goal in as many games, and his fifth of the season.
Coventry responded well and equalised ten minutes later, thanks to Simms’ persistence. The striker latched onto Torp’s brilliant through ball and saw his initial shot saved by Hazard, but he followed up and tapped in the rebound. It was his seventh goal of the campaign, and his third in four games.
Miller’s cross puts Plymouth back in front
The game looked set for a draw, but Plymouth regained the lead in the 68th minute, with a stroke of luck. Miller, who had come on as a substitute, whipped in a cross from the left that hit Bobby Thomas and looped over Brad Collins into the net. It was a cruel own goal for the defender, who had otherwise performed well.
Coventry pushed for another equaliser, but they struggled to create clear-cut chances. Thomas had a header wide from a corner, and Jake Bidwell’s shot was blocked by a defender. Plymouth looked comfortable and confident, as they aimed to secure their first win in four games.
Kitching rescues a point for Coventry in injury time
However, Coventry had other ideas, and they snatched a point in the dying seconds of the game. Torp, who had been influential throughout, delivered a low cross from the right that Kitching flicked in at the near post. It was the defender’s first goal for the club, and it sparked wild celebrations among the Coventry players and fans.
The final whistle blew shortly after, and both teams had to settle for a point. Coventry extended their unbeaten run to five games, and moved up to sixth place with 54 points. Plymouth remained in 14th place with 40 points, 11 points above the relegation zone.
