The 9th Olympia Health & Nutrition Awards, held last week in Athens, celebrated olive oils rich in health-protecting phenolic compounds. Organised by the World Olive Center for Health (WOCH), the event recognised over 250 producers from 10 countries for their exceptional extra virgin olive oils. This year, more than 600 olive oil samples were tested at the University of Athens. The ceremony, held at Eleon Loft, a site of Athens’ ancient olive grove, marked WOCH’s six-year anniversary and featured presentations on scientific studies backed by WOCH.
Celebrating Excellence in Olive Oil Production
The Olympia Health & Nutrition Awards have become a prestigious event in the olive oil industry. This year, the awards highlighted the importance of phenolic compounds in olive oils, which are known for their health benefits. Over 250 producers from 10 countries were recognised for their high-quality extra virgin olive oils. The event showcased the dedication and hard work of these producers in creating olive oils that meet the EU’s health claim criteria.
The ceremony was held at Eleon Loft, a historic site in Athens, adding a touch of tradition to the modern event. Attendees included scientists, producers, and olive oil enthusiasts who gathered to celebrate the achievements of the award winners. The event also featured presentations on the latest scientific research on olive oil and its health benefits.
One of the highlights of the ceremony was the recognition of Ellis Farm, Greek EVOO Olea True, and Olive Fabrica for their contributions to high phenolic extra virgin olive oil (HPEVOO) research. These producers have set a high standard in the industry, demonstrating the potential of olive oil to improve health and well-being.
Scientific Insights and Innovations
The awards ceremony was not just about recognising excellence in production but also about sharing scientific insights and innovations. Professor Georgios Spanoudis from the University of Cyprus presented a clinical study showing that HPEVOO can improve cognitive function and reduce fatigue in multiple sclerosis patients. This study highlights the potential of olive oil to support neurological health.
Dr. Evangelos Dadiotis from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens shared animal studies revealing that cannabinoids and olive oil phenols can combat epilepsy, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease. These findings open new avenues for research and potential treatments using olive oil compounds.
Professor Georgios Samoutis from the University of Nicosia discussed a clinical trial on olive oil phenols in capsule form, which showed promise in managing metabolic syndrome. This innovative approach to using olive oil compounds could lead to new dietary supplements and health products.
The event also featured a presentation by Dr. Pavlina Sverak from the University of Minnesota on the use of HPEVOO and curcumin for neurofibromatosis. The study noted significant reductions in severe itching, headaches, and pain for some patients, showcasing the therapeutic potential of olive oil.
Future Directions and Initiatives
WOCH President Dr. Eleni Melliou announced several new initiatives aimed at furthering olive oil research and education. These initiatives include doctoral scholarships, the establishment of the non-profit Olive Lab & Shop, and the formation of a Hellenic Olive Network. These efforts aim to foster collaboration between Greek scientists, businesses, and the agricultural sector.
The Hellenic Olive Network will serve as a platform for sharing knowledge and resources, promoting innovation in olive oil production and research. This initiative is expected to strengthen the ties between academia and industry, leading to new advancements in the field.
Dr. Melliou also highlighted the importance of educating producers on creating healthier olive oils. WOCH plans to offer training programs and workshops to help producers meet the EU’s health claim criteria. These educational efforts will ensure that more producers can create high-quality olive oils that offer significant health benefits.
The ceremony concluded with the announcement of the Olympia Awards, which were given to Ellis Farm, Greek EVOO Olea True, and Olive Fabrica for their support of HPEVOO research. Special Top Gold Awards went to The Greek Olive Estate, Atsas Organic Products, Falcon SA’s Oleve brand, and Sparta Original Greek D. Sakkas Co. for their phenol-rich EVOOs. These awards recognise the exceptional quality and health benefits of these olive oils.
