Apple Sets a Foldable Stage Without a New $799 Phone

Apple set September 9 for iPhone 18 Pro and a foldable, while suppliers say the regular iPhone 18 waits until spring 2027.

Apple set its next iPhone event for September 9 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, under the tagline “Surprise and shine.” The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected on that stage, along with the company’s first foldable phone. The regular iPhone 18 is not.

Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, posted the invite on August 26. Press will sit at Apple Park in Cupertino, and the stream will run on Apple’s site, the Apple TV app, and YouTube.

Apple Locked In September 9 With a Sunrise Invite

The company has not named a single product. The watch the September 9 Apple Event page only promises a special event at 10 a.m. PT, with a calendar file and the same sunrise-through-the-logo art Joswiak sent to reporters and iCloud users who opted into announcements.

That clip is the whole official brief: six seconds, a glowing mark, and a date. People who follow these invites already treat the tagline as a joke, because the phones have been named in the supply chain for months. The invite is a hold on the calendar, not a secret.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The date: Wednesday, September 9, at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, streamed from Apple Park.
  • The boss: John Ternus became CEO on September 1, eight days before he has to walk onstage.
  • The split: Camera-lens maker Largan Precision and assembler Pegatron have both pointed to a spring 2027 slot for the cheaper iPhones.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • The name: Supply-chain notes call the folder iPhone Ultra; other briefings still use iPhone Fold.
  • The ship date: Analysts say the folder may be announced in September and sold later, as the iPhone X was in 2017.
  • The rest of the stage: Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4, AirPods 5, and iOS 27 dates are still rumor, not invitation text.

None of that will stop the stream. It does change what the stream is for. For more than a decade the September hour sold the phone most people actually buy. This year that phone is being held.

The Fall Lineup Leaves Out the Volume iPhone

The iPhone family is now six models, not four. Fall is being reserved for the three that print the most money. Spring 2027 is where the rest are expected to land.

THE SPLIT IPHONE YEAR

Window Models expected Last year’s starting price, for scale
Fall 2026, on the September 9 stage iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, foldable iPhone (often called Ultra) Pro $1,099; Pro Max $1,199; folder priced far above both
Spring 2027, not on this stage iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, iPhone Air 2 iPhone 17 started at $799; Air started at $999

Last September, a buyer who wanted a new iPhone and did not want a Pro still had a door at $799. That door is the iPhone 17, and it will still be the current-generation regular phone through the holidays if the spring slip holds. Anyone who insists on a new model in the fall is being steered toward a Pro, which started $300 higher last year, or toward a folder that analysts put in another league.

Six Phones, Two Launch Windows

The pattern, as the supply chain has described it, is simple. Flagships in the fall. Lower-end devices in the spring. iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and a second iPhone Air would follow in 2027, which also stretches the shelf life of iPhone 17 as the default gift phone.

That is a gift-aisle problem as much as a factory one. A holiday shopper who used to grab “the new iPhone” at a mid-tier price will be looking at last year’s regular model, a Pro, or a folder that may not be in the case yet.

Suppliers Moved the Cheap Models to Spring

Lin En-ping, chairman of Largan Precision, told shareholders that a major U.S. customer had postponed a new model to the first quarter of 2027. Largan is Apple’s main iPhone camera-lens supplier, and it rarely talks about a client’s calendar in public.

Pegatron, which assembles iPhones, said on its second-quarter 2026 earnings call that customers were shifting shipment plans because memory and other chips were tight. It still expected the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max in September, with the standard iPhone 18 in the first quarter of 2027. The company said it was sitting on about $1 billion in chips waiting to be packed, and that scarce parts were being steered toward higher-margin phones.

Shortage and strategy land in the same place. The September hour still exists. The $799 slot does not.

A $2,300 Folder May Miss Its Own Launch Window

The foldable is the object everyone will screenshot. Book-style, titanium in the frame, an outer panel around 5.5 inches and an inner panel around 7.8 inches, thin enough when open (about 4.5 to 4.8 mm) that the TrueDepth camera system is not expected to fit. Touch ID in the power button would replace Face ID, a reversal on the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever priced.

Ming-Chi Kuo, who surveys that supply chain, put the U.S. price at $2,300 to $2,500 and the early build at a trickle.

My latest industry survey indicates that assembly shipments for the foldable iPhone in 2H26 will be roughly 7 to 8 million units, with 3Q26 shipments at 0.5 to 1 million units, or about 10% of the total. By comparison, estimated 3Q26 shipments of the iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max total roughly 20 to 22 million units, significantly higher than the foldable iPhone and already meeting the inventory requirement for an official launch.

Ming-Chi Kuo, supply chain analyst, on X

Those 7 to 8 million foldable units are a second-half figure, not a launch-week figure. Half a million to a million phones in the July-to-September quarter is not a national unboxing. Kuo has said Apple may do what it did with iPhone X: announce in September, ship later, with waits of 4 to 6 weeks or longer and resale markups of 50 to 100 percent until December.

If that holds, the folder is a keynote prop in September and a scarce object in the fourth quarter. The iPhone 18 Pro Max would then have the top of the store to itself for the weeks that actually move holiday units. A $2,300 to $2,500 phone that is not on the shelf cannot steal those sales.

Ternus Takes the Stage Eight Days After the Handover

The hardware show is also a management show. Ternus, who ran Hardware Engineering, became chief executive on September 1. Cook, CEO since 2011, moved the same day into a new executive chairman seat and kept the government-relations brief.

FROM THE HANDOVER TO THE KEYNOTE

  1. April 20, 2026: Apple’s board names Ternus as the next CEO, effective September 1, and says Cook will stay through the summer to hand over the job.
  2. August 26, 2026: Joswiak posts the “Surprise and shine” invite for September 9.
  3. September 1, 2026: Ternus takes the CEO title and a board seat; Arthur Levinson becomes lead independent director.
  4. September 9, 2026: Ternus’s first product keynote, eight days into the job.

Apple’s April notice is the clean record of the handoff. It said Tim Cook will become executive chairman and that Ternus, who joined the product design team in 2001, would take the chief executive job. Cook’s letter called him an engineer with “the soul of an innovator.” Ternus, in the same notice, said he had worked under Steve Jobs and had Cook as a mentor.

I am humbled to step into this role, and I promise to lead with the values and vision that have come to define this special place for half a century.

John Ternus, Apple CEO, April 20, 2026 newsroom statement

Under Cook, Apple’s own figures show market value moving from about $350 billion to $4 trillion and yearly revenue from $108 billion in fiscal 2011 to more than $416 billion in fiscal 2025, with an installed base above 2.5 billion devices. Ternus inherits that machine and, in his first public hour, a lineup that withholds the volume phone. The engineer who spent years arguing over hinges and grams now has to sell a calendar change as if it were a feature.

Two Days Earlier, a Rival Stages the Same Shape

Xiaomi has set September 7 at 7 p.m. in China for its own autumn event, two days before Apple’s stream. The company has already shown the Xiaomi 18 Fold, which it calls a “mid-fold”: a 5.38-inch cover, a 7.58-inch inner screen, folded down to about the size of a passport. Lu Weibing, who runs Xiaomi’s phone business, said the closed phone is meant to be used with one hand and is lighter than Xiaomi’s earlier large folders.

Those sizes sit on top of the Apple rumor sheet. Kuo’s 5.5-inch outer and 7.8-inch inner panels are the same idea, a wide book rather than a tall, narrow slab. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 is already in that passport conversation. By the time Ternus speaks on September 9, a Chinese rival will have put a physical phone of that shape on a stage and named the hinge.

Apple still has the install base, the store network, and the habit of making September feel like a national holiday for phones. It does not have a monopoly on the silhouette anymore, and it does not have a cheap new iPhone in the same hour. The “surprise” in the invite is arriving after the category has already been sketched in public, twice.

What the iPhone 18 Pro Is Expected to Add

The Pro phones are the product that can actually ship in volume. Kuo’s survey put combined iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max third-quarter builds at 20 to 22 million, enough, in his words, to meet launch inventory. That is the pile Pegatron is protecting.

RUMORED IPHONE 18 PRO HARDWARE

  • Camera: A variable-aperture main lens, with the same general screen sizes as the iPhone 17 Pro pair.
  • Island: A smaller Dynamic Island, still the front-camera cutout rather than a hole-punch.
  • Radio: Apple’s C2 modem, the in-house cellular chip that follows the first C1 generation.
  • Colors: Dark cherry, black, silver, and light blue in the briefings that have circulated with the invite.

Memory tightness is the other Pro story. People who watch the same factories expect Apple to raise some prices because RAM and NAND are scarce, which would push the fall mix even further up the ticket. The company has not published those numbers, and it will not until September 9. What it has already done, through the suppliers, is decide which phones get the scarce parts first.

A compact island and a new modem are iterative. They are also the phones carriers can put on a two-year plan in September without waiting on a hinge line. If the folder slips, the Pro Max is not a backup. It is the plan.

Last Year’s Regular Phone Holds the Holiday Aisle

Walk the next few weeks as a shopper, not as a keynote viewer. On September 9 Apple will talk. On a typical year, pre-orders open that Friday or Saturday, with boxes in stores about a week later. TidBITS, looking at that habit, has already penciled Friday, September 11 or Saturday, September 12 for orders and September 19 for arrival, with a possible shift off September 11. Apple has confirmed none of those sell-through dates.

Even if the Pro phones land on that rhythm, the regular new iPhone will not. The iPhone 17 remains the $799 current model. The iPhone Air remains the thin $999 current model. The folder, at $2,300 to $2,500 in Kuo’s range, is a collector allocation if Q3 output stays under a million. Carriers that built September around a four-phone poster now have a two-phone poster and a teaser.

Ternus does not get a gentle first keynote. He gets a sunrise graphic, a hinge the industry has already seen, and a fall quarter that asks full price for Pro hardware because the cheaper new phone is sitting in 2027. On September 9, Apple will try to fill the holidays with two Pro models and a folder that may still be on the assembly line.

Ten years in journalism, from reporter to editor, have settled into a set of verification habits he applies to every story. A quote is checked against the recording or transcript it came from. A statement attributed to an organisation is confirmed on that organisation's own channels before it is repeated. A figure is traced to the dataset or filing that first published it, and a photograph is checked for when and where it was actually taken. If any of those checks fails, the claim is left out or clearly marked as unconfirmed.
