Azrael Takes the Cowl in DC’s Knightquest Trailer
Warner Bros. posted the Knightquest trailer on September 19, confirming Jean-Paul Valley as Batman, the replacement live-action films always skipped.
Warner Bros. released the Batman Knightfall Part 2 trailer on September 19, 2026, and it names Jean-Paul Valley as Batman. Bane has already broken Bruce Wayne. The sequel, Knightquest, now belongs to Azrael.
The clip dropped on Batman Day with no street date attached, only a “coming soon” card and a pre-order line. That gap is the tell. The studio is selling a replacement, not a calendar.
Knightquest Hands the Cowl to Jean-Paul Valley
Part 1 ended with Bane snapping Batman’s spine and dumping him off GCPD headquarters. The new trailer picks up there. Bruce is paralyzed from the waist down. Gotham still has to be policed. The man who gets the cape is not Nightwing and not Tim Drake’s Robin. It is Jean-Paul Valley, the assassin also called Azrael, voiced by Pablo Schreiber.
Warner Bros. Entertainment posted the 1:35 spot itself, with the line “Batman has fallen and a new Dark Knight must rise.”
The official Knightquest plot synopsis does not hedge the handoff, or the violence that comes with it.
Batman lies broken at the hands of the villainous mastermind Bane. With Bruce Wayne paralyzed from the waist down and unable to continue as Batman, a new successor must be chosen to defend Gotham City. Jean-Paul Valley, the man also known as Azrael, must take up the mantle of the Batman. But will his more violent methods be enough to stop Bane?

Anson Mount is still Bruce. Michael Mando is still Bane. Jack Griffo returns as Tim Drake, Simon Templeman as Alfred Pennyworth, and Toks Olagundoye as Dr. Shondra Kinsolving, the physician who has already started asking Bruce about the deaths that hollowed him out. Bruce Boxleitner is Commissioner Gordon. Early looks at the footage also put Two-Face in the street fight Azrael inherits.
The image that sticks is not a wounded playboy learning to walk. It is a new Batman who shoots first. That is the joke people walked away repeating, and it is the plot. Knightquest is the chapter where the cowl stops meaning mercy.
A 79-Minute R-Rated Opener Already Landed
Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios announced the trilogy at New York Comic Con in October 2025 as part of the DC Universe Animated Original Movies line. Jeff Wamester directs. Jeremy Adams writes. Jim Krieg and Kimberly S. Moreau produce, with Rick Morales as supervising producer and Sam Register and Michael Uslan as executive producers. Studio Mir, the Korean house behind The Legend of Korra, is animating it.
Part 1: Knightfall premiered at Annecy on June 23, 2026, then hit digital on August 25 and 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on September 8. It runs 79 minutes and carries an R rating for strong bloody violence. Jesse Schedeen scored it 9 out of 10. Swara Ahmed called it the best animated Batman film since Mask of the Phantasm.
The rating was not the original plan. Morales and the board artists first cut the film as a PG-13 Batman picture. Executives told them they could go further. They did, including a burning-death beat that had been planned offscreen. The finished movie is the meaner version.
THE THREE-FILM CLOCK
| Film | Story title | Status | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part 1 | Knightfall | Out on digital and disc | Digital August 25, 2026; disc September 8, 2026 |
| Part 2 | Knightquest | Trailer out, film unreleased | Later 2026, no day named |
| Part 3 | KnightsEnd | Announced | Early 2027 |
Part 1 on digital and disc already did the job Hollywood usually stops at: Bane as a planner, Batman run into the ground, the back broken in public. Knightquest is the expensive half of the dare, the film that has to make a substitute Batman watchable and wrong at the same time.
Why Bruce Wayne Picks an Assassin Over Robin
In the comics Bruce had reasons, and the movie is walking the same path. Dick Grayson was Nightwing, with his own city and his own neck to risk against Bane. Tim Drake was still a kid Bruce had just fired for disobeying orders. Jean-Paul was already in the cave, already trained, already asking to be useful after Batman caught him killing.
Part 1 opens on that arrest. Azrael is butchering Kobra traffickers when Batman stops him. A truck then kills the man Jean-Paul was about to finish, and the assassin comes out of the rage long enough to give his name and beg for help. That is the audition. Bruce spends the rest of the film ignoring Alfred, ignoring Tim, and ignoring Gordon, then pays for it on the roof.
THE SUCCESSORS BRUCE DID NOT CALL
- Dick Grayson: Already Nightwing, and Bruce treats him as too exposed to throw at a man who just broke the Bat.
- Tim Drake: The third Robin, voiced by Jack Griffo, who spends Part 1 being shut out and then watching the fall on a live feed.
- Jean-Paul Valley: A Gotham student the Order of St. Dumas built as a holy killer, which is exactly why he is available and exactly why he is a problem.
Morales has been blunt about who the saga is actually for. Part 1, in his telling, belongs to Bane. The next two films have to carry Jean-Paul.
We’ve got three movies here, and in my mind we’ve got three main characters: it’s Bane, it’s Batman obviously, and it’s Jean-Paul Valley. From my perspective, this is Bane’s movie essentially.
Rick Morales, supervising producer, Batman: Knightfall
That split is why the trailer feels like a lead change. Mando’s Bane still holds the city. Mount’s Bruce is on his back. Schreiber’s Jean-Paul is the person the camera now has to follow into rooms Batman would have left alive.
The System That Turns Batman Into a Killer
Jean-Paul Valley first showed up in Batman: Sword of Azrael #1 in October 1992, created with Dennis O’Neil and Joe Quesada. He is a graduate student who finds out his bloodline is an assassin title for the Order of St. Dumas. The Order’s training tool is called the System, a stack of hypnotic programming that can seize him in a fight and rewrite his sense of what a body is for.
Part 1 already shows the switch flipping. Jean-Paul panics when Franco Bertinelli’s gunmen open fire. Later he kneels in a church and hallucinates a priest and a Templar telling him to listen to the Order. Knightquest is where that voice gets a cape.
Morales pitched the whole trilogy by drawing a Kelley Jones Batman and Azrael, then refusing to modernize them. Designers asked if they were really keeping the Nightwing ponytail. He said yes. The look is 1990s on purpose, because the armor is the plot.
In the comics Jean-Paul starts in Bruce’s suit, then decides it is not cruel enough. After a beating from Bane he sits down and designs a new shell. That armored Az-Bats gear, blades on the gauntlets and a sealed face, first hits the page in Batman #500. It is less a costume than a verdict: Batman’s rules are obsolete, and the System is happy to replace them with edges.
Producer Jim Krieg wants the three films to read as a loss that has to happen before a return. “Sometimes to find yourself, you have to lose yourself,” he said. “You have to let yourself be healed. You can’t do everything alone.” Knightquest is the lose-yourself movie, and Azrael is the form the loss takes.
Live-Action Batman Stopped at the Broken Spine
The 1993 Knightfall comic saga ran into 1994 across the Batman line, and the panel everyone knows is still Batman #497, Bane driving Bruce’s spine into the floor. Christopher Nolan lifted that break for The Dark Knight Rises in 2012, then sent Bruce to a pit and skipped the substitute. There was no Azrael. There was no System. There was no Batman who started killing in Bruce’s name.
That cut is why this trailer is doing work a $250 million movie did not. Krieg’s version of Bane is not a dull slab on venom tubes. “He’s not beating Batman with his muscles. He’s not even beating him with the Venom. He’s beating him with his mind,” Krieg said. Mando tracked the same idea in the voice: Bane as an orphan of misery set against Bruce as an orphan of money, each sure the other is the lie.
Part 1 already spent time on Santa Prisca, Peña Duro, the inherited prison term, and the Venom trials, because Morales did not want another rewritten Bane. “Why make this movie if we’re just gonna change him again?” he asked. Having kept Bane intact, the studio is now keeping the other half Hollywood keeps deleting: a Batman with no brakes.
Thirty-three years after the comics began, that is the bet. An R-rated animated trilogy can stage the ugly successor because it does not have to protect a toy aisle or a shared live-action slate. The cowl can look wrong. It can cut people. It can make Robin and Gordon flinch.
Gotham Gets a Batman Before It Gets a Date
Knightquest is listed for later in 2026. KnightsEnd is listed for early 2027. Neither film has a day. The trailer’s last card is still “coming soon,” and pre-orders are already being taken at participating retailers. The loudest note under the clip was not lore. It was the calendar.

Krieg has already flagged the thread that will pull Bruce back toward the cowl, and it is not a workout montage. He said the relationship with Shondra is the piece he is most impatient for people to see, because Batman almost never gets to be a patient. If the comics hold, her hands are how a paralyzed man stands up in time to fight the Batman he appointed.
Until then the city on screen has the protector it asked for. Jean-Paul Valley has the cape. Bane still has Gotham. And Knightquest still does not have a Wednesday.
