Taco Bell Shrinks the Cheesy Gordita Crunch Into a $5.49 Snack
Gordita Crunch Duos turn the Cheesy Gordita Crunch into a steak or chicken two-pack, then route the snack into Taco Bell’s $9 Discovery Luxe Box.
Taco Bell put Gordita Crunch Duos on menus on September 17, a two-pack snack remix of the Cheesy Gordita Crunch for $5.49. Each order is steak or slow-roasted chicken, not the seasoned beef that still fills the full-size original.
The chain dated its Irvine release September 10 and called the item a snack-sized remix available for a limited time. The same two-pack also lands in the $9 Discovery Luxe Box, which is how a between-meal SKU still builds a meal ticket.
A Two-Pack Built on the Cheesy Gordita Crunch
Taco Bell has sold a Cheesy Gordita Crunch since April 2001, more than 25 years of flatbread, melted cheese, and a crunchy taco glued together. The Duos keep that stack and cut the size, then sell the result as a pair.
The brand’s own launch note on X treated the name like a loop in someone’s head, which is the tone it uses when it wants an item to feel like a snack, not a sit-down meal.
our inner monologue is just gordita crunch duos on repeat
— Taco Bell (@tacobell) September 17, 2026
“Our inner monologue is just gordita crunch duos on repeat,” Taco Bell wrote from @tacobell. The September drop around that post was wider than one taco: Crispy Chicken Crunchwrap Sliders, Crispy Chicken Nuggets, and Diablo Ranch Steak Nacho Fries went out the same day.
What You Get in the $5.49 Order
Each order is two mini tacos. You pick grilled, marinated steak or savory slow-roasted chicken for the whole pair; there is no mix of one steak and one chicken in a single bundle. Warm flatbread is layered with mozzarella, pepper jack, and cheddar, then wrapped around a white-corn shell that Taco Bell says is fried daily. Creamy chipotle sauce, lettuce, and pico de gallo go on top.
The suggested price is $5.49 at participating restaurants, with tax extra and higher prices on delivery. In Columbus, Ohio, launch-day tickets rang up at $6.49 a two-pack, about $3.25 per mini, against a $6.29 Cheesy Gordita Crunch in the same store. That is $0.20 more for two small tacos than for one full original.
THE BUILD, SIDE BY SIDE
| Item | Protein | Sauce | Shell | Sold as |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cheesy Gordita Crunch | Seasoned beef | Spicy ranch | Crunchy taco | One piece, still on the menu |
| Gordita Crunch Duos | Steak or chicken | Creamy chipotle | White corn, fried daily | Two-pack, $5.49 suggested |
| Nashville test, October 2025 | Beef, chicken, or steak | Creamy chipotle | White corn | Two-pack; beef $3.49 |
The original is still a flatbread wrapped around a crunchy taco with beef, spicy ranch, lettuce, and cheddar. The Duos swap the protein, the sauce, the pico, and the corn color, then ask you to buy two.
Steak and Chicken Took the Beef’s Place
A Taco Bell spokesperson said the Cheesy Gordita Crunch lives on texture, and that the new proteins were the way to look at a fan favorite through a different lens. “In this case that meant bringing in premium proteins like grilled, marinated steak and savory, slow-roasted chicken to create a craveable innovation that stands on its own,” the spokesperson said.
That choice is the price lock. Beef is the filling people already know from the full-size item. Steak and slow-roasted chicken let the chain call a snack “premium” and keep the two-pack near five and a half dollars instead of sliding it onto a value board.
Megan Hageman, who ordered both two-packs on September 17 in Columbus, counted about four small pieces of steak in each mini taco. She said the meat was tender and the chipotle ran out the sides, and that the chicken, the same slow-roasted meat used on Cantina items, carried the sauce better than the steak did. She wanted triple the meat, the old spicy ranch, and a mix-and-match pair, none of which shipped.
THE LAUNCH IN NUMBERS
- Calories in a Duos order: 340 calories for steak or chicken, the same figure on both proteins.
- Calories in the original: 480 calories for one Cheesy Gordita Crunch.
- Local two-pack: $6.49 in Columbus against a $6.29 full-size original in that store.
- National ask: $5.49 suggested, $9 if you take the Discovery Luxe Box.
Smaller on paper is not the same as lighter in the drive-thru. The calorie cut is real. The meat cut is what testers felt first.
The $9 Box Stops the Check From Shrinking
If the Duos stayed a $5.49 add-on, afternoon traffic would nibble at check averages. The Discovery Luxe Box is the counterweight. For $9 it turns the two-pack into the center of a full tray.
INSIDE THE $9 DISCOVERY LUXE BOX
- The Duos: One steak or chicken two-pack.
- The shells: A Doritos Locos Taco and a Crunchy Taco.
- The side: Chips and nacho cheese sauce.
- The drink: A medium fountain drink, with freezes and specialty drinks excluded.
Taco Bell has used this $9 box as a rotating stage all year. In April it carried a Triple Double Crunchwrap. In the October 2025 Nashville test, a $9 box around the sliders still had cinnamon twists. The national box now leans on chips and two extra tacos, which is a heavier haul than a snack two-pack on its own.
Liz Matthews, Taco Bell’s global chief innovation officer, framed the smaller builds around how Gen Z eats between meals, especially in the afternoon. Technomic has reported a 7% year-over-year rise in snack visits, the figure the chain has been citing since March.
This generation loves to snack. Making things small is where the consumer’s at. People want to feel good after they eat and about what they eat and that includes having the right amount. We’re thinking about that more than ever.
Liz Matthews, Global Chief Innovation Officer, Taco Bell
The right amount, in this rollout, is two mini tacos that can still be sold with a Doritos Locos Taco, a crunchy taco, chips, and a drink. Nacho Fries already moved from limited runs to the permanent menu in 2026. Mexican Pizza Empanadas, sold in threes or sixes with seasoned beef, a three-cheese blend, and dipping sauce, did the same shrink job on another old favorite.
Nashville Already Sold a Beef Version
The national menu is not the first time this taco has been small. In October 2025, Taco Bell tested Gordita Crunch Sliders in Nashville with the same white-corn shell, three-cheese glue, chipotle, and pico. That test still offered seasoned beef, plus chicken and steak.
Beef was the cheap lane, $3.49 for the two-pack, with chicken and steak in a $4.49 to $5.49 band depending on the store. An in-app $6.99 Snack Trio bundled the sliders with Nacho Fries and two Cinnabon Delights. None of that beef SKU, and none of that sweet trio, came east with the national name change.
Cutting beef does two jobs at once. It keeps the full-size Cheesy Gordita Crunch as the only beef version on the board, so the new item does not cannibalize the old one on the same protein. It also stops the snack pack from landing at $3.49, a price that would have made the $9 box look like a stretch.
Cheesy G Sliders Waited Six Months for a New Name
On March 10, Taco Bell put Cheesy G Sliders on the 2026 roadmap at Live Más Live at the Hollywood Palladium. The write-up then already listed two pillowy flatbreads, daily-fried white-corn shells, mozzarella, pepper jack, cheddar, lettuce, pico, creamy chipotle, and a choice of grilled marinated steak or slow-roasted chicken. The food did not change much. The name did.
THE SNACKIFICATION CALENDAR
- 1998: Taco Bell launches the Gordita line in Supreme, Fiesta, and Santa Fe builds.
- April 2001: The Cheesy Gordita Crunch arrives as a limited item and later stays for good.
- 2014: Spicy ranch replaces the Baja sauce that first sat on the Cheesy Gordita Crunch.
- October 2025: Nashville restaurants test Gordita Crunch Sliders, including a $3.49 beef two-pack.
- March 10, 2026: Live Más Live unveils Cheesy G Sliders among 20-plus items, with Nacho Fries headed to the permanent menu.
- September 17, 2026: The same slider build ships nationally as Gordita Crunch Duos, without beef.
The Cheesy Gordita Crunch itself followed that path. It came in as a limited offer, left, came back, and then refused to die. In 2006 it even returned again as a short run. The Duos are the reverse play: take a permanent item, cut it down, and see if the small one earns its own slot.
Crunchwrap Sliders Return With Diablo Ranch
The other limited item on the same board is the Crispy Chicken Crunchwrap Slider, back with Hidden Valley Diablo Ranch Sauce. The slider wraps all-white-meat chicken nuggets in a tortilla-chip coat, then adds pico, a shredded three-cheese blend, and the new ranch. Earlier runs offered creamy chipotle or jalapeño honey mustard instead.
Diablo Ranch Steak Nacho Fries landed beside them. One launch-day tasting even poured leftover Diablo Ranch onto the steak Duos after the chipotle came off as smoke without enough meat under it. That is the tell on this whole tray: the sauce collab is doing extra work the mini taco does not do alone.
Taco Bell now runs nearly 10,000 restaurants in more than 40 countries, a chain that has been stacking limited items since 1962. Gen Z is the majority of its guest base, and Matthews has said those guests want a treat in the afternoon without a full meal sitting in the stomach. The Duos are that treat on the menu board. The $9 box is what happens when the treat still has to pay for the drive-thru.
The full Cheesy Gordita Crunch remains on sale in its old size, with beef and spicy ranch, for anyone who wants the 25-year version. The two-pack is the experiment in the hours around it.
